Interplay is the name of the game with Scenes new release "Trapeze". Saxophonist Rick Mandyck's tune, "All Day Pass", opens the set. It's a medium tempo, well crafted original with lots of open space. All players participate, carefully listening to each other, bending twisting and creating a dark and mysterious canvas. Rick's strong tone and his ability to carefully pace his notes allows the players time to absorb and react to what he is saying.... read more
The year that was 2020 was a pivotal period for trombonist and jazz artist Ben Patterson. That is because he saw so much change in his own career throughout the year. After more than two decades as a member of the United States Air Force Band's Airmen of Note (as well as its lead trombonist and musical director), Patterson stepped down from the positions and left the organization. Then in March, the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down.... read more
This ensemble might have been labeled the Brent Jensen Quartet. They recorded One More Mile under the Idaho-based saxophonist's name. For their album Motives, however, they are calling themselves the Wellstone Conspiracy as they delve deeper into a melodic music that is steeped in the modern harmonic concepts of Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.
The set opens with Jeff Johnson's grainy, guitar-like bass lines on the Jensen-penned "Bye Bye... read more
Jazz artists from Carmen McRae to Joe Pass to Grover Washington Jr. have interpreted Stevie Wonder's music. But now, a generation of jazz musicians who grew up drawing inspiration from Wonder during his heyday have also been acknowledging his importance. Count among their number the Chicago-based Deep Blue Organ Trio, who this year released the tribute album 'Wonderful!' Comprising guitarist Bobby Broom, Hammond B3 organist Chris Foreman and... read more
I always love receiving a Bobby Broom CD for review, he is such a good improviser. He has two working trios, his organ trio and this one which was formed in 1991. This album Lerner and Loewe's "The Heather On the Hill" and the old chestnut "Tennessee Waltz". The empathy is already there when recording with a working group which usually makes for a great album. I was pleased to see among the tunes "Sweet and Lovely" and "My... read more
George Colligan serves up an interesting if not slightly eclectic offering to offer a breath of fresh air to the all too predictable jazz trio format.
George Colligan is a lunch pail pianist, he works incredibly hard. A diligent performer, teacher and over all student of music himself, Colligan has had the good fortune to develop a long association with iconic drummer Jack DeJohnette as well as an incredibly poor choice in one... read more
Lost Recordings.... A "live" recording dating back to December 4, 1991 when tenor saxophonist John Gross, pianist Art Resnick, drummer Billy Mintz and bassist Jeff Johnson got to work together at Falcon Studios in Portland, Oregon.
On the program all compositions by Johnson ranging from razor-sharp bop with solos by the four musicians ('Linden Station') to ballads with jagged corners ('Leviathan'), mid-tempo swing... read more
The erstwhile guitarist (for Sonny Rollins among many others) mixes original songs and covers of unusual sources?the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love," Jimmy Webb/Glen Campbell's "Wichita Lineman"-- in a way that features the strengths of the compositions as well as those of the trio. Uncluttered production emphasizes a clarity of sound that further highlights how it's possible to take a straightforward approach to recording and playing and in so... read more
