Luminosity is the third album from German jazz pianist Hoefner. This is finely made jazz that sits right in the pocket of the mainstream of contemporary style - a prevalent minor key feel, driving rhythms with more than a little rock feel - that is the long tail of Keith Jarrett's European Quartet. The sound is familiar, but this is not a criticism, because it's also involving.
The story behind Hoefner's third release is that, having... read more
The trio format without a chording instrument (a guitar or keyboard) tends to loosen the atmosphere, giving the music a more fluid feel. Bassist Jeff Johnson, joined by saxophonist Hans Teuber and drummer Tad Britton, achieves a compelling chamber-like fluidity on Near Earth.
Teuber's tenor saxophone approach here has a clean, clear, bracingly cool feel on its interplay with with Johnson's round bass lines and the intricate textures from... read more
Port Sad Street is perhaps more accessible but no less consequential as it offers a kind of jazz journey by two virtuoso string players. Jonas Tauber is the cellist - he is known primarily as a bassist but has realized a lifelong dream "to play cello in this way" - and he deftly plays rhythmic complement to guitar explorations and presents solo turns both bowed and plucked. The tunes are a mix of jazz standards and guitarist Francis... read more
Former Chicago bassist Lorin Cohen has a new disc out from Origin Records called Home. First off, props to Cohen for some really outstanding arranging on this album. Cohen has created really nice "sonic palates" for his musicians to work with. And Cohen didn't take the easy way out, instrumentally speaking, either. Throughout Home, you'll hear steel pans, harmonica and vibes, along with the usual Jazz rhythm section of piano, bass and drums.... read more
At the ripe age of 72 David Friesen has achieved a major breakthrough with Where the Light Falls. He is an artist who has labored intensely and compassionately for a lifetime in the jazz harvest, inspiring and teaching many the joys of music, and he is reaping his bounty now. Joined by his Circle 3 Trio mates Greg Goebel on piano and Charlie Doggett on drums with guitarist Larry Koonse on several tracks, Mr. Friesen has been set free to compose... read more
If modern Havana still has back streets like in "Godfather II", this sounds like what those sounds would probably sound like. As the label moves out of it's traditional comfort zones for a date recorded in Portugal, the world wise colorations make a nifty change of pace in the label's generally impeccable canon. With passages that could easily be "West Side Story" outtakes, is this our first taste of modern, progressive Hispanic jazz or have... read more
After reviewing both of Hadley Caliman's previous two Origin Records releases, Gratitude and Straight Ahead, I felt that Hadley had many bright moments ahead of him. He had retired from teaching at Cornish College after 22 years of teaching, and was enjoying playing in Seattle, leading a small group as well as playing with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra.
Gratitude was recorded in 2008, and Straight Ahead... read more
In 2019, after I'd been writing for DownBeat Magazine for about a decade, I was asked to review a batch of new albums from Brazil, including one by a Rio de Janeiro-based singer named Delia Fischer who wrote her own songs. I gathered that, in addition, she was a jazz pianist, an arranger, and the musical director for several hit musicals in Rio. She had worked with Brazilian legends like Marcos Valle, Egberto Gismonti, and Milton Nascimento, who... read more
