Benjamin Boone - Caught in the Rhythm
by Tom Haugen, Take Effect

An artist who is well versed in composing and playing the saxophone, Benjamin Boone brings the work of contemporary poets with spur of the moment jazz ideas across these 13 adventurous tracks.

"Mississippi 1955 Confessional" opens the listen with Hashem Assadullahi's soaring sax and Peter Brendler's well timed bass complementing T.R. Hummer's fluid wordplay in the warm jazz climate, and "Hoodwitches (Redux)" follows with Faylita Hicks'... read more

Hadley Caliman - Straight Ahead
by Brad Walseth, JazzChicago.net

Based on his background and abilities, it is astonishing that a player like tenor saxophonist Hadley Caliman is not more well-known. Originally from L.A., Caliman studied with Dexter Gordon before touring with Mongo Santamaria, Gerald Wilson, Willie Bobo, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson and many more, even - at one point - touring live with the rock group Santana. For more than twenty years, he was a member of the music faculty... read more

John Stowell - Solitary Tales
by Peter Westbrook, Cadence

Solo guitarist Stowell, heard on Solitary Tales, has a sound harking back to Classical guitar playing with none of the rhythmic stiffness sometimes associated with it. The opening track, "Everything I Love," moves from chiming rubato passages to an improvisation that alternated between thoughtful, climbing episodes and swinging single-note lines. I was reminded of Joe Pass' solo recording for Pablo--but where Pass occasionally overwhelmed me... read more

John Bishop with Jeff Johnson, Rick Mandyck, John Stowell - Scenes
by Doug Ramsey, Rifftides

I've been meaning for some time to call your attention to this stimulating cooperative venture recorded in 2001. Hearing bassist Johnson and guitarist Stowell in separate appearances at the recent Portland Jazz Festival nudged me. They meld beautifully with saxophonist Ricky Mandyck and drummer John Bishop in a balanced program that draws on music by Jerome Kern, Wayne Shorter, John Scofield and Tom Harrell, among others. Stowell's solo on McCoy... read more

Nanami Haruta - The Vibe
by Mark Griffith, Modern Drummer

As Modern Drummer's Readers Poll winning Best Jazz Drummer, Ulysses Owens Jr. has already left his drumming mark, and he continues to show us why. He can bash and swing with best, but sometimes (as drummers,) our job is to offer the support that is needed to the leader and the gig. Young trombonist Nanami Haruta is a virtuoso from Sapporo, Japan; and this is her bandleading debut. She has won numerous awards and studied with the great... read more

Tom Collier - Alone in the Studio
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

One of the most eclectic multi-instrumentalists you are ever going to run across, Collier pulls the sum total of 50 years at this gig together with a set that has you rapt by things like vibe solos played with such an innocence and lack of guile you almost forget where you are. It's the chops---they're well done. Smart and sly jazz that takes you from classics to originals, he's been everywhere with everyone and it's easy to see why.... read more

Alex Graham - The Good Life
by Butch Berman, Berman Music Review

With "The Good Life" and an entirely different back-up ensemble, Alex Graham has done it again, and in spades. Recorded back in 1998, this is truly a dynamite piece of work from beginning to end. It's another no-frills, straight-ahead jazz album played to perfection, and a song selection to match. Alex on alto, flute and clarinet is brilliantly supported by this trio of solid senders.... read more

New York Voices - Reminiscing in Tempo
by Editor, Jazziz

With the release of their 11th album, Reminiscing in Tempo, New York Voices celbrate their 30th year as one of jazz's premier vocal groups. A survey of some of their favorite composers, the album contains interpretations of songs by Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, Chick Corea, Ivan Lins and Fred Hersch, as well as a couple of original tunes. The Voices dive into the Great American Songbook with a swinging read of Cole Porter's "It's... read more
