Broom is celebrating the release of his fine new guitar trio CD, My Shining Hour (Origin Records), featuring nine gem-like standards with a little bit of help from his friends and fellow jewelers, Dennis Carroll on bass and McCraven on drums.
In its own somber, reflective, bluesy way, Broom's original, poetic interpretation of "The Tennessee Waltz" is one of the freshest takes on the Patti Page mega-hit of 1950 since Sam... read more
Scott Reeves is a Trombonist, Alto Flugelhornist, Composer and Educator. He has performed and recordered with some of the best Jazz Big Bands playing today like the Dave Liebman Big Band, Bill Mobley's Smoke Big Band, The Oliver Lake Big Band and the Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra. In addition to all his fine performing, Scott is Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at the City College of New York. He was also on the... read more
It's odd to think that a recording in 2019 could be deemed to have become "historic" upon its release, but this one - Vivencias en Clave (Featuring Coco Freeman - by Kiki Valera actually is; and it is historic in more ways than one. First of all, decades into his life as a musician - and that too one from the fabled Familia Valera Miranda with its almost 300-year-old tradition of music - Kiki Valera has only now made his debut recording.... read more
5-STARS From one perspective, It Could Happen is a teaser title for this big band recording. Sure, it's a perseveration of one of the scrumptious cuts on this cake. However, like a fine Le Cordon Bleu recipe, if you heap eleven exceptionally well-written GAS and original selections into the pot and set great charts before some of the finest cookers this side of Eiffel, season with solo and vocal work that boils with sass, and... read more
Thelonious Monk's compositions and piano playing are declarative and often angular. On "Bobby Broom Plays for Monk" (Origin), Broom, a guitarist who plays regularly with tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, proves subtle and nuanced. With band mates Dennis Carroll (bass) and Kobie Watkins (drums), this is a pleasing alternate take on Monk.
Monk never recorded with a guitarist except on bootleg tapes from a 1940s jam session. His bassist and... read more
Don't believe what your ears might tell you: there are only four guys on bassist Doug Miller's new album Regeneration.
The versatility and chops on display here, most notably by Jay Thomas, who plays trumpet, flugelhorn, tenor, soprano, and flute on this date, are either inspiring or discouraging, depending on your outlook. Joining Thomas is Miller, who wrote the majority of the album's compositions, Dave Peterson on guitar and keys, and... read more
It sometimes astounds me, when I hear local musicians whose talent is world class, and yet they are perhaps not very well known outside the boundaries of Chicago, although they should be. Case in point is pianist/composer Kelly Brand, who is known to the jazz fans of Chicago, but deserves a much wider audience based on her stellar playing and composition skills. If there is any justice in the world, her new nextet recording "The Door" will open... read more
These historic Northwest jazz recordings are from Seattle and Portland from 1973 and 74 with a stellar band called Morning Star. Friesen and Heldman met in the early sixties in Seattle. Both were bass players and influenced by the work of Scott Lafaro. They played and wrote music as well as being close friends. So they would not be limited to two bass players, both were self-taught piano players. After years of developing, in the 1970's they... read more
