Jazz CD of the Month. In the last ten years a number of jazz artists have released recordings that attempt to fuse jazz and country music; these efforts have yielded results of varying success. Guitarist Corey Christiansen's latest effort is without doubt an exception. Lone Prairie captures the mood of classic country and puts into a jazz context. Wonderfully executed, the date features Christiansen's impeccable chops and the... read more
An inspired recording of tremendous passion and depth that takes the Joni Mitchell road less traveled. The immediate success of Songs of Shadow, Songs of Light could be linked to the less than predictable greatest hits collection other contemporaries are quick to offer up. Antonioli's band is first rate, A-list players such as bassist John Shifflett and a cameo from the great Theo Bleckmann opening the release with "People's Parties."... read more
The bass man makes a solo piano set on a Ravenscroft piano where all the tracks are solo miniatures that seem improvised but probably have a ton of composition behind them. It's just that he makes it all look and sound so easy. You try and duplicate it! Call it a throw back to new age piano solo if you need to but it really is instrumental music that exists on a plane all of it's own. Well done by a real... read more
Thespirit of the joyous, scat singing, bebop giant Eddie Jefferson is clearly present in the work of Giacomo Gates. This, his third album, easily measures up to the first two, and maybe even surpasses them. Part of the reason is the presence of a very swinging group backing the singer. The basic trio of Harold Danko, piano; Ray Drummond, bass and Greg Bandy, drums, is augmented on several tunes by Vincent Herring, alto sax and Vic Juris, guitar.... read more
Two Israeli expatriates who stumbled upon one another on the New York jazz scene, pianist Roy Assaf and bassist Eddy Khaimovich put together a debut that capitalizes on the theme of modernization, updating not only classic compositions with new arrangements and reworkings, but updating the stylings of classic players through the quartet's stylings. The album opens with a groove-heavy rendition of Cole Porter's "All of You," also unveiling the... read more
4-STARS At one point, Galper was in danger of being recognised more as an educator than a pianist, although a couple of recent sessions for Origin should have put paid to that.
Similarly, this archive release is a strong reminder that post-bop was alive and well in the 1970s. The hard-driving and enthusiastically-received set is reminiscent of the famous Coltrane quartet at its most farout, but it has no suggestions of free-jazz or... read more
Every summer at the Pt. Townsend Jazz Festival, I'm blown away by the brilliance of Seattle's New Stories.
The piano trio featuring Marc Seales and his rhythm team of bassist Doug Miller and drummer John Bishop are joined by New York heavyweights such as Don Sickler and Bobby Porcelli on a recently released tribute to the music of Elmo Hope called Hope Is In The Air (Origin).
Produced by Sickler and recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at... read more
Percussionist Michael Waldrop plays both drums and mallet instruments (vibes and marimba). He has a PhD and currently is a professor of percussion at Eastern Washington University, where he teaches both jazz and classical courses.
He also directs a big band, and this is that ensemble's inaugural album.
Once upon a time - back in unenlightened times - drummers often were looked down upon. (Question: "How big is your band?" Answer: "Sixteen... read more
