Amit Friedman - Unconditional Love
by Jack Bowers, All About Jazz

Once upon a time, jazz, an American creation, was confined for the most part within its borders. But that was once upon a time. Today, any barriers that once kept jazz within a prescribed realm have long since vanished, and the music Americans once embraced as their own has flourished around the world, performed with increasing awareness and dexterity by artists who have built upon the patterns created in the land of its birth to weave colorful... read more

Scott Burns - Passages
by Phillip McNally, Cadence, Nov-Oct 2007

Scott Burns comes out of Dexter mainly, playing late bop and swinging fiercely on Passages. He's got a nice deep tone and some fleet fingers, but he is always melodic and telling a story, not just honking over some Blues riffs. The trio is very nice behind him, and in particular Ron Perrillo is accomplished, with a bit of Silver in his veins, but he always knows how to get out of the way and let Burns steal the show. The compositions, all of... read more

Mike Pope - The Parts You Keep
by Dee Dee McNeil, Making A Scene

Geoffrey Keezer's piano introduction is stunning on an original composition by Mike Pope called "Misgivings." This tune was so captivating that I had to play it twice before I could go forward with reviewing this album. It's not only his piano elegance and delivery, but the melodic flow of this composition and the unexpected movement of this piece that hypnotizes me. Mike Pope's electric bass is melodic, playing his own song, almost like a... read more

Various Artists - Modern Jazz: A Collection of Seattle's Finest Jazz
by Adam Greenburg, All Music Guide

A nice compilation of the lighter and somewhat more mainstream end of the Origin label's growing catalog of Seattle jazzers. With a number of artists represented, the mainstay of the album is a focus with something of a modern bent. There are aspects of post-bop to be heard, and slight references to the third stream set, but far and away, the bulk of the material is based in contemporary instrumental jazz. The piano plays heavily in all or most... read more

Bill Anschell - Figments
by Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz

Pianist Bill Anschell normally involves himself in projects that shine with a high polish, recordings like the Wellstone Conspiracy's collaborative Motives (Origin, 2010) and his own More to the Ear than Meets the Eye (Origin, 2006), or in the sideman slot on the marvelous Reunion, led by saxophonists Pete Christlieb and Hadley Caliman. In addition, Anschell served as Nnenna Freelon's pianist/arranger/musical director for a number of years,... read more

Thomas Marriott - Both Sides Of The Fence
by Ric Bang, The Davis Enterprise

I'm beginning to think Seattle has replaced Los Angeles as the focal point of the West Coast jazz scene.

Almost half the releases I've received during the last year have featured artists or groups that have started in - or migrated to - that city. Trumpeter Thomas Marriott is one such individual. Although he played for years, he didn't become known until the mid to late 1990's. He's Seattle born and began his career in that city, then... read more

Jared Hall - Seen on the Scene
by Tom Haugen, Take Effect

The Seattle trumpet wizard Jared Hall returns with a sophomore album as leader, where he's in the company of Vincent Herring (alto saxophone), John Hansen (piano), Michael Glynn (bass), and Matt Jorgensen (drums) across instrumental jazz tunes that are both originals and classics and are executed with much attention to detail.

Hall starts the listen with the bouncy bass and warm keys highlighting the timeless jazz of the title track, and... read more

Marlene Rosenberg - Bassprint
by John Barron, The Jazz Word

Chicago bassist Marlene Rosenberg has performed with a host of international jazz luminaries, including Kenny Barron, Frank Foster, Stan Getz and Joe Henderson. A couple of decades ago she recorded with drummer Ed Thigpen on his now classic recording Easy Flight. Her third recording as a leader and debut for Seattle's Origin Records is Bassprint, showcasing Rosenberg's strength as both a performer and composer.

Rosenberg's meaty tone and... read more
