Mark Zaleski - OUR TIME: REIMAGINING DAVE BRUBECK
by Héctor Martin, Canción a Quemarropa (Canary Islands)

This next September 17, 2021 will see the light of the last release of the record company Origin Records under the title of Our Time: Reimagining Dave Brubeck, a recording of Mark Zaleski Band. The Mark Zaleski Band is a powerful sextet led by the saxophonist and arranger that gives the band its name.

On Our Time, Mark serves as frontman for the Boston-based band and presents several fresh insights into the genius' classic compositions: Dave... read more

Anthony Branker and Word Play - Uppity
by George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

Composer & arranger Anthony Branker has put together an intriguing six piece suite with a sextet and vocalist that can be approached both musically and socially. Of the latter, the theme of the piece is concerning latent and overt racism in America a la the Trayvon Martin case and the latest presidential election campaign. Musically, it?s hard to beat Ralph Bowen?s tenor sax gliding over the rhythm section of Jim Ridl/key, Kenny Davis/b and... read more

Brent Jensen - More Sounds of a Dry Martini
by Russ Hubert, Adult Music Podcast

This is a very enjoyable, listenable album if you're a fan of Dave Brubeck and the Paul Desmond sound. Jensen captures that spirit really well, and goes through an assortment of Desmond's later recordings, as well as some Brubeck material. Is this a tribute? Is it a homage? I don't know, but it's just great. And you should have a double martini for this one because it's just a sweet-sounding recording. We don't hear sax played like this so much... read more

John Stowell - Solitary Tales
by Ric Bang, The Davis Enterprise

Guitarist John Stowell lives and works in and around Portland, Ore. He may not be well known to the general public, but he's a "musician's musician" to name guitarists and those who know the music world well. Stowell also is a famous clinician who conducts classes throughout the United States and Canada.
This solo guitar album is his newest release on Origin; it's true gem for those who enjoy the instrument.
As it happens, Mike Doolin, one of... read more

Benjamin Boone - Caught in the Rhythm
by Paul Rauch, All About Jazz

4 1/2 STARS The connection between poetry and jazz music is a delicate one. It has been documented so infrequently, in performance and recordings, that one still conjures the flicker of an image of Jack Kerouac reading in some dark Greenwich Village cafe with Steve Allen or Zoot Sims, surrounded by beret-wearing, cappuccino-sipping beatniks. The work of Fresno-based saxophonist Benjamin Boone has assisted in widening that view through... read more

John Stowell - Solitary Tales
by Matthew Warnock, Just Jazz Guitar Magazine

John Stowell has spent the last thirty years developing a reputation as one of the finest guitarists and educators in the country. John has a unique playing style, holding the guitar almost upright like a cellist. His incredible harmonic vocabulary has given him a personalized sound that has become instantly recognizable to fans of jazz guitar. Along with his performing career, John is also in high demand as a teacher and clinician. Over the... read more

Ben Patterson Jazz Orchestra - Mad Scientist Music
by Dick Metcalf, Contemporary Fusion Reviews

Brilliantly balanced jazz sophistication Ben Patterson Jazz Orchestra - MAD SCIENTIST MUSIC:

This album is one of the most brilliantly balanced jazz albums I've ever listened to. If you're craving the ultimate in hip, you'll find the 7:23 "The Mixup" fills that bill very nicely... unpredictable, yet totally accessible... you'll find yourself grooving right along on every notel

From my perspective, it was (unquestionably) the 6:27 closer,... read more

Jessica Williams - With Love
by George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

The most vulnerable of recordings, the solo piano, is well represented here under the hands of Jessica Williams. She creates about an hour's worth of a mellow, reflective and ruminating mood on graceful readings of standards such as "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "For All We Know." Her touch on "My Foolish Heart" has an inquisitiveness about it, and while "But Beautiful" exudes grace, she still dazzles with technique, but as an accent... read more
