Pianist Matija Dedic's MD in NYC tiptoes into existence on a delicate rhythm, joined in short order by a sprinkling of crystalline notes in the melody, with a whisper of brushes and spare but assertive bass lines. "Her Name" is one of the pianist's five originals in the set, and has a wistful reverence that speaks, perhaps, to a yearning infatuation, bringing to mind the artistry of Bill Evans and Herbie Hancock.

One of the great things about jazz is that there's always room for persuasive new voices, especially those who've mastered the vocabulary and know how to swing. Saxophonist David Sills, now in his mid-thirties, qualifies easily on both counts, as he shows consistently on Down the Line, evidently his second album as a leader of his own group, although Sills has recorded with a number of other first-rank musicians.
Sills has enlisted a clever... read more
For her third solo guitar release, San Francisco-based Mimi Fox blends folk, pop and jazz standards into a collection of accessible, high spirited jazz. Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" opens up the disc with bluesy inflections and impressive double time soloing with bass lines, chords and riffs spread out in even proportion. "Cry Me a River" by nature lends itself to soulful inflection and Fox turns the tune inside-out. A grand... read more
Colligan is a renowned pianist composer who also whetted his chops on trumpet from time to time. On this new outing on Seattle's Origin label he switches to drums. He has worked with the great Jack DeJohnette and Billy Hart on some of his previous recordings, and some of it has rubbed off. He is a very melodic drummer, fluid, casual and precise. The tunes are slightly spacey post bop with some Latin Jazz whispers, and they are all killer no... read more
Joined by pianist Greg Goebel and drummer Charlie Doggett, legendary bassist/composer David Friesen presents here a two-disc set of live and studio recordings comprised entirely of originals, all of them in a generally straight-ahead but harmonically adventurous style. Guitarist Larry Koonse pitches in on about half of the tracks as well, and those are some of the most enjoyable — though the whole album is great. Friesen's backup playing is... read more
I don't know if the use of the word Bridge in this group's name is a reference to Portland's numerous Willamette River crossings or, perhaps, a suggestion that this ismusic to reach out to anyone willing to listen. Perhaps both concepts might be fitting. Three quarters of this quartet are resident Portlanders: Darrell Grant, piano; Tom Wakeling, bass; and Alan Jones, drums. The fourth is tenor saxophonist Phil Dwyer, who makes frequent forays... read more
Chuck Deardorf uses a full arsenal of basses on this album with Dawn Clemen/p-key, Matt Wilson/dr, Hans Teuber/ts-fl and guests Marc Seale/p, Gary Hobbs/dr, Thomas Marriott/fh, Jay Thomas/fh and David Marriott/tb. On electric bass, Deardorff creates a Weather Reportish mood with Seales on the tapestry of "Falling Grace" while getting elegiac on "Silver Hollow." A pair of tunes by Thelonoious Monk have Teuber's tenor join with Deardorf's soft... read more
Doug Miller's Regeneration is straight-ahead jazz in the modern vein, with a few twists, not the least of which is that there are drums on only four of the eleven tracks, giving the music a nice chamber jazz vibe. The bassist composed all but two of the tunes, and presents a fine mix of feels and meters. Noteworthy is his Ballad for Don and Midge and his dedication to John Clayton, Blues For Junior. The two standards included on the recording... read more
