Affinity Trio - Hindsight
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

You get more with less with the drummerless Affinity Trio consisting of Eric Jacobson/tp, Pamela York/p and Clay Schaub/b on this mix of boppers and originals. York and Schaub take turns supplying the feel, with bluesy beauty for Jacobson's sweet horn on "Open Windows" and bringing an easy peppy feel to Cedar Walton's "Hindsight". York is elegant and soft for Jacobson's horn on "Theme For Ernie" with Schaub supplying nimble fingers on "Tin Tin... read more

Jordan VanHemert - Survival of the Fittest
by C. Michael Bailey, Wild Mercury Rhythm

We needn't consider jazz as only a product of the Ease and West Coasts. The American interior also provides its share of splendid jazz music and musicians. An example is tenor saxophonist Jordan VanHemert. Born in Cheongju, South Korea and raised in Holland, Michigan, VanHemert took up alto saxophone at 11, eventually gravitating to the tenor saxophone in high school. Following a degree in music from Central Michigan University and graduate... read more

Tom Rizzo - Day and Night
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

An ace guitarist that can play with the shimmering lines of Joshua Breakstone or Pat Martino covers songs even though he can write interesting stuff and calls in first call hands to lend a hand because it's obvious he cares. A solid, swinging date that sure to delight jazz guitar fans, everything you could want in a smoking performance is delivered here. Well done... read more

Rodney Whitaker - Mosaic: The Music of Gregg Hill
by Ayana Contreras, DownBeat

4-STARS From the opening title track, this album is a declaration of mastery. It's also a formidable showcase to the collective strength of this combo as well as of Gregg Hill's compositions: It's all killer, no filler. "Mosaic" is a bouncy, juicy number held down by the alchemy present in the interplay between Whitaker's walking bass line that's sharp as a fresh straight razor and Dana Hall's simply effervescent drumming style. Each... read more

Cathy Segal-Garcia & Phillip Strange - Live in Japan
by C. Michael Bailey, All About Jazz

Smart and accomplished, West Coast vocalist Cathy Segal-Garcia releases her 15th recording, Live In Japan, on the heels of her well-received Social Anthems, Volume 1 (Origin Records, 2021). Live In Japan is a retrospective December 1992 performance that pairs the singer with her frequent collaborator, pianist Phillip Strange. Recorded in Osaka during the holidays, Segal-Garcia sprinkles her two generous sets with enough seasonal music to qualify... read more

Brad Goode - Polytonal Big Band: The Snake Charmer
by Editor, Modern Drummer

Don't let the "polytonal" name fool you, this is a nice and pretty traditional big band with some extra-expressive soloing (that's part of the "polytonal" ingredient.) playing very nice and well-conceived charts. Most of the compositions and arrangements are by trumpeter Brad Goode and they run the gamut from inside and swingin' to slightly funky. Goode's arranging approach is where more of the polytonal aspect of the band enters, but it isn't... read more

Karrin Allyson - A Kiss for Brazil
by Eg'dio Leitão, Música Brasileira

A Kiss for Brazil is not Karrin Allyson's first incursion into Brazilian music. I would not need to list her previous albums here to convince you she truly has an affinity for the Brazilian songbook.

Karrin Allyson (1962, Great Bend, Kansas) does not shy away from singing in Portuguese or choosing a less obvious repertoire from the Brazilian songbook. Her 1999 From Paris to Rio album first caught my attention. The CD had several Bossa Nova... read more

Rich Thompson - Less Is More
by Jack Garner, Rochester Democrat & Chronicle

Rochester?s great jazz tradition has given birth to an inordinate number of superb drummers, including Steve Gadd, Joe La Barbera, John Beck, and Mike Melito. Right in that mix is Rich Thompson. This latest album ? his best yet ? is a polished, straight-ahead offering (but with none of its soulful grit polished off.) A wonderful quintet ? rising trumpeter Terell Stafford, saxophonist Doug Stone, pianist Gary Versace, and bassist Jeff Campbell ?... read more
