Hal Galper - Live at the Berlin Philharmonic, 1977
by Paul Simpson, The Answer is in the Beat (WCBN)

Alright, so here's a previously unreleased live set performed by a bunch of artists I should probably be more familiar with. This concert was recorded after Galper had just finished a tour with Cannonball Adderley, and he's joined by Randy and Mike Brecker, Wayne Dockery, and Bob Moses. All six songs are around 10-25 minutes each, and all five musicians simply go off. Opener "Now Hear This" is just nonstop energy for 14 minutes. "Speak with a... read more

Jordan VanHemert - Survival of the Fittest
by Editor, Modern Drummer

Lewis Nash has never played a "bad" note in his life, and that's why he's on so many records. He proves this again on saxophonist Jordan VanHemert's third recording as a leader. Whether it's Nash's dancing brushes on "Tread Lightly," his intro and rollicking five-minute duet with VanHemert on "Softly as in a Morning Sunrise," or his uber-musical solo on "Milyang Arirang," everything Lewis Nash plays works to perfection. Listen to Lewis Nash's... read more

Rich Thompson - Less Is More
by Grady Harp, amazon.com

It is not often that the lead man in a group is a drummer but that is most assuredly the case with drummer Rich Thompson who is the driving force behind this propulsive quartet recording that features a choice selection of tunes and exceptional soloists.

This is one of those albums that has it all - the transitional sound
for the 'old-timers' who have loved jazz forever as well as for the
avant garde who groove on new... read more

Les DeMerle Sound 67 - Once in a Lifetime
by Editor, Dusty Grooves

Rare lost work from funky drummer Les DeMerle - a set of tracks that were recorded for Atlantic Records in 1967, two years before DeMerle's classic Spectrum album - yet which finally appear here for the first time ever! Les is rock-solid, right from the start - definitely one of those younger players really helping to shift the sound of the larger jazz group at the end of the 60s - with fresh arrangements that bring in plenty of currents... read more

Joachim Mencel - Brooklyn Eye
by Sebastian ChosiƄski, Esensja (Poland)

Dreams are there to make them come true! Polish jazz pianist (also playing the hurdy-gurdy) Joachim Mencel dreamed of recording an album in New York for years, with American artists accompanying him. The assumption was that the music was also inspired by North America. All this was achieved in one fell swoop thanks to the publishing house "Brooklyn Eye".

In Poland, Joachim Mencel does not have to prove anything to anyone. For years,... read more

Scenes - ...But Not Heard
by Martin Z. Kasdan Jr., Louisville Music News

Guitarist John Stowell, whose collaboration with Dave Liebman, Blue Rose, was reviewed here in December, has long worked collectively with bassist Jeff Johnson and drummer John Bishop (part of Hal Galper's trio, reviewed here last month) under the name Scenes. Guest saxophonist and flutist Hans Teuber adds an extra dimension to this new album, with both his playing and compositions (he wrote or co-wrote four of the seven songs here). Stowell is... read more

Anthony Branker & Imagine - Songs My Mom Liked
by Tom Haugen, Take Effect

The composer and director Anthony Brankar brings along an excellent cast for these fusion filled tracks that make up his 10th Origin record.

Fabian Almazan's swift keys open on "Praise", where the warm brass enters amid much flowing melody, and "Sketches Of Selim" follows with Linda May Han Oh's precise bass plucking that sets a mood of mystery and elegance.

Further along, "Land Of Milk & Honey" showcases Donny McCaslin's bright sax and... read more

Geof Bradfield - Urban Nomad
by Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Geof Bradfield's second date as a leader shows a great degree of maturity for a relatively young player. Doubling on tenor and soprano saxes, he penned six originals for the session, which includes pianist Ron Perrillo, bassist Clarke Sommers, and drummer George Fludas. "Urban Nomad" is an enticing, melancholy post-bop vehicle that embodies a sense of wandering, featuring the leader's engaging soprano. He switches to tenor for his robust, funky... read more
