Thirty-one years ago, pianist-composer Richard Sussman released an LP (2/79, p. 54) that became something of an
underground Post-Bop classic. To celebrate Free Fall's CD release in 2003, Sussman reconstituted most of the original group (saxist Larry Schneider didn't make it) for a two-night gig at New York's Sweet Rhythm.
Although between the 1979 recording and the 2003 one, trumpeter Harrell, tenorist Bergonzi, bassist Richmond, and... read more
Not everyone who reads my reviews know that I got my start in "show business" doing live spoken-word, so Phil's excellent poetry is a total treat for me... it's earned a permanent place on my iPhone (yikes, I'm running outta' space)... Benjamin's hip & silky sax on tunes like "The Unknowable" is what convinced me it had to be there... there are a whole HOST of other players on this fantastic CD, so long a list, in fact, that you'll need to go to... read more
Bill Evans' 'Alone' is the default paradigm for introspective solo piano recordings. Evans was actually in Webster Hall in New York (capacity 2,500) when he recorded it, but he sounds exceedingly lonely. Bill Anschell recorded 'Figments' himself, after gigs, alone in his home late at night. Anschell does not sound like Evans, but the deep, rapt atmosphere of personal spiritual inquiry on 'Figments' is one that Evans would have... read more
The Seattle scene may be known for it's grunge rock sound, but it also a fertile ground for Jazz musicians. This recording is the real deal. Three musicians go into the studio and just blow. "Speak Glow" finds them off and running. Saxophonist Carter is chased around by the rhythm section. He blows fluid lines while drummer Keplinger is a whirling dervish, and bassist Radding plays big notes. Keplinger solos, sounding like Elvin or Blakey as he... read more
Preceded by a lively geopolitical controversy linked to alleged funding, Abate Berihun's performance was the most anticipated and feared event of the St. Louis International Jazz Festival. On Baya Square, the Ethiopian artist and his Addis Ken Project swept away the tensions to leave only the magic of the notes. The story of a therapeutic concert.
He was the most commented guest of the festival, even before he had set foot on... read more
We get many female jazz vocal albums sent in for review. Most don't make the cut, so when I review one it has to be rather special. This one is special. Don't know how I missed Ms. Matassa all this time - she's appeared on five previous Origin CDs. I knew she was big in the Seattle area, but hadn't heard a CD. This is a voice with real personality, range, control, and good humor. It's a package that features a lot more than just singing in... read more
