Bill Anschell - More To The Ear Than Meets The Eye
by John Nyerges, www.jazzradio247.com

This Origin Records 2006 release starts with deconstructing the melody Night & Day and has wonderful rhythms (!!) floating over the bar lines. Monkisms, use of space, ? time feel, and the chordal voicings are all very musical. The accompaniment of Miller and Martinez is top shelf here (as is everyone on this CD).
Then comes an original tune more rhythmic in it's melody than say a more typical linear approach as in an older song-style standard ... read more

Steve Million - What I Meant to Say
by Editor, Kansas City Jazz Ambassadors

In the 1980s, Pianist Steve Million lived in a modest neighborhood that is now home to the beautiful Kauffman Gardens in Kansas City. Guitarist Steve Cardenas and pianist Steve Million were half of the Ida McBeth band of the era, along with drummer Jon Cushion and bassist Forrest Stewart.

The new Origin release, "What I Meant to Say" is a testament to Steve Million's talent as a songwriter. The November 2019 recording session in Paramus, NJ... read more

Michael Waldrop - Native Son
by Scott Yanow, Los Angeles Jazz Scene

Drummer Michael Waldrop, who led four previous albums including two at the head of a big band, is featured at the head of a quartet/quintet on Native Son. He contributed all of the originals (co-writing one song) other than Alec Wilder's "The Wrong Blues."

Most notable about this project is that it features consistently brilliant piano playing from Vasil Hadzimanov who is based in Serbia, and that the piano trio with bassist Martin... read more

Trio East - Best Bets
by Ed Trefzger, JazzWeek

A WORKING GROUP since 2001, the "power trio" of Clay Jenkins on trumpet, Jeff Campbell on bass and Rich Thompson on drums keeps a regular Thursday gig a few blocks from the Eastman School of Music where all are on the faculty. The absence of piano on this understated CD of mostly originals and a few uniquely arranged standards provides plenty of space for Jenkins' smouldering but clear trumpet, Campbell's driving bottom end and Thompson's... read more

Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra - Sacred Music of Duke Ellington
by Adam Greenburg, All Music Guide

If a repertory orchestra is going to do something, it might as well go big. Here, the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, in combination with the Oregon Repertory Singers and a handful of guests, take on music from Duke Ellington's three Sacred Music concerts. The performances are flawless, running the range from gospel to jazz to something mighty close to American opera, with nary a false note. And the compositions are of the highest caliber, of... read more

James Moody - 80 Years Young: Live at the Blue Note, March 26, 2005
by Jack Bowers, All About Jazz

4 1/2 STARS When it comes to having fun, few events can compete with a birthday party. Fun is clearly at the summit of the agenda on 80 Years Young: Live at the Blue Note, recorded at the famed New York City nightspot on March 26, 2005, to celebrate saxophonist James Moody's eightieth birthday, and released on the same date in 2025 to honor the centenary of his birth. Moody, who, with trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, comprised one of... read more

Corey Christiansen - Lone Prairie
by Linda Yohn, WEMU

Is the guitar today's universal instrument? Actually, the voice is our first and most universal instrument, but the guitar could follow shortly behind it. In permutations from the oud to the cittern, zither, bouzouki and many others, portable stringed instruments are easy to transport and play while singing. These instruments including today's modern guitars are versatile in all styles of music.

This morning's 89.1 Jazz premiere, Lone... read more

Tito Carrillo - Urbanessence
by Carmel de Soto, Jazz Music Archives

Tito Carrillo's latest album, "Urbanessence" on Origin Records, is a must-hear. This trumpet player and composer is mixing it up, blending jazz, salsa, Latin jazz, gospel, blues, funk, and soul to create a unique and magical musical experience. Carrillo even included an original track from Phil Koceril to mix things up even more.

Carrillo's ensemble is a powerhouse, featuring himself on trumpet, Troy Roberts on tenor and soprano saxophones,... read more
