Alon Farber Hagiga with Dave Douglas - The Magician: Live in Jerusalem
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

Saxist and leader Akib Farber delivers a concert at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem with special guest on trumpet Dave Douglas along with a local team of Yehonatan Cohen/ts-cl, Oded Meir/tb, Katia Toobool/p, Assaf Hakimi/b and Roy Oliel/dr. The team is in an effervescent mood, with Douglas bright and dramatic working on his own "Persistence of Memory" and leading the gallop along with the horns on "Spring Ahead". Hakimi gives a hip and funky feel... read more

Josh Nelson - The Sky Remains
by Lynn Rene Bayley, The Art Music Lounge

Pianist and composer Josh Nelson's new album, The Sky Remains, due for release September 15, is a mosaic of his impressions of his home town, Los Angeles. Live performances of the music from this album feature multimedia film footage to enhance the audience's experience.

More often than not, programmatic music designed to depict a specific location or event fall flat for those whose experience does not include those places or images. In... read more

Chuck Deardorf - Transparence
by Michael Steinman, Cadence

Bassist Deardorf's 'Transparence' also has it's integrity--rooted in the recent Jazz past without being overtly nostalgic or imitative. A few of the selections are too "electric" for my taste, but my taste is admittedly narrow. The acoustic tracks--featuring pianist Mays, altoist Teuber, and a variety of guitarists--are simply lovely. Deardorf is not afraid of beauty; playing a ballad with sincerity and gentleness is in his very nature; he is... read more

Andrea Brachfeld & Insight - Evolution
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

Andrea Brachfeld plays a wide variety of flutes to create diverse moods, teaming up with Harvie S/b, Bill O'Connell/p and Jason Tiemann/dr-perc on this collection of originals. African moods are created with her wood flute and kalimba on the mystical "The Hut Song" while a trip to South America brings her clay flute to team with O'Connell on an alluring "Qingauitt". A vocal message is rapped out on the modal "Child of the Earth" and messages are... read more

RadioAction - Hi-Fi
by Adam Greenburg, All Music Guide

The group RadioAction is made up four young modern jazz artists working out of the New York area, although recorded here by the West Coast label Origin. These artists have something to say with their interpretations of the items on the play list, whether it be one of the original compositions or a jazz or classic standard. The tone of their conversations is sometimes piercing, as guided by the alto sax of Alex Graham and Whitney Ashe's piano on... read more

Nick Finzer - The Chase
by Rob Young, The Vertical Spin

After what appeared to be a decline of trombonist missing in action as featured soloist on the jazz scene, it's great to see the emergence of exciting newcomers on the horizon like the accomplish composer, arranger, and bandleader Nick Finzer at the helm. He arrives ready to play his invigorating compositions on second offering appropriately titled "THE CHASE" on Origin Records.

Considering the array of talent musicians and music available... read more

Ben Patterson - Push the Limits
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

A spark plug in several big bands of long standing, the bone man really fans the flames when he kicks it out on his star turns with his own crews. Opening this proceeding with an original 10 minute tour de force, Patterson brings it hot and heavy making his mark and tattooing your ears. A really fierce cat that ain't afraid to use his claws. Hot stuff... read more

Hal Galper - E Pluribus Unum - Live in Seattle
by Ethan Krow, Audiophile Audition

Hal Galper has often worked best with small bands. He flourishes when working with a simple trio of piano, with drum and bass, especially in the last few decades. On his latest release with Origin E Pluribus Unum: Live In Seattle he reunites with bassist Jeff Johnson from 2006's Furious Rubato and brings in drummer John Bishop for a wonderful night including several compositions by Galper and a few delightful covers.

Irving Berlin's... read more
