Jazz trumpeter Brad Goode has achieved success as both a performer and educator (University of Colorado), and this adventurous 2008 release demonstrates his desire to continue to push the harmonic envelope. As the title of the recording suggests, every tune is written or arranged using poly- chordal harmonies. Although the sound of polytonal harmony is initially jarring, the musicians navigate through the potentially dangerous harmonic landscape... read more
James Moody, the late jazz legend who left us in 2010, endures as one of the towering figures of 20th-century jazz. His long-time collaborator and friend Dizzy Gillespie once said, "Playing with James Moody is like playing with an extension of myself."
This concert opens with "Benny's From Heaven", a joyful number that features Moody's voice a rare treat and immediately sets the tone for the evening. The joy he radiated on stage is palpable... read more
Pianist Hal Galper's signature style involves bending and stretching pieces as far as they can go in the rubato style, and fully exploring where that strategy leads. For his sixth recording built on that approach, he again comes up with intriguing results, with the help of longtime collaborators Jeff Johnson and John Bishop on bass and drums, respectively.
The Trio's interpretations present an ever-engaging clash of form and freedom, with... read more
American trombonist and (since last year) baritone saxophonist MICHAEL DEASE released a new album "Found In Space: The Music of Gregg Hill" on September 20 on the Origin Records label. In the eleven-member line-up...
Michael Dease won this year's 69th DownBeat Annual Jazz Critics Poll as Trombonist of the Year! In addition to playing in various quintets and sextets, he is especially appreciated as a player in leading jazz orchestras, led by... read more
Doug Beavers Rovira isn't the first bandleader to reach out to the "diminutive demographic," but he may be the first to do so without pretense or condescension. In other words, Rovira doesn't play "down" to toddlers and children, he raises them "up" by clothing nearly a dozen nursery rhymes and songs in clever orchestral arrangements that would please even the hippest adult listeners. Blend in charming vocals by Matt Catingub and Linda Harmon... read more
Likable quartet session from bassist Hamar, who runs with the double saxophone attack of tenor man Rich Perry and altoist Todd DelGiudice. With Julian MacDonough rounding out the rhythm section, it?s a nice set of straight-ahead jazz. Some post-bop burn, some hard bop bounce, and tracks that keep throwing pitches within the strike... read more
"When I started asking musicians to read these chords, they wanted me to go away and die," Brad Goode tells fellow trumpeter John McNeil in the liner notes to the harmonically twisted Polytonal Dance Party. McNeil's witty observations and the accompanying lead sheets underscore the challenges that Goode's recruits faced--and ultimately surmounted. Still, it has to be said that listeners with a low tolerance fo otherworldy harmonic schemes... read more

I first heard Hans Teuber with his sly, sweet, and swell sax work backing Kendra Shank, and his new release Lucky - is a rare gem. If there is a "third-stream" - Hans is the leader of the pack, and with a Brazilian twist that gets under your skin, ever so nicely. Best use of guitar (Paul Meyers) and sax together since the jazz samba Getz/Gilberto. You really can't get enough of it. Nouveau bass wonder Santi DeBriano... read more
