Sometimes you just don't need anything more than a driving leader and a bunch of like minded jazzbos that brought their chops to make sure a good time is had by all. A real dynamo trumpeter, Hall leads with a sure handed lip guiding a cast of characters that doesn't need to be told what to do. You don't even need a libation to go with this because you won't want to miss a note. One solidly swinging good... read more
BEST ISRAELI JAZZ OF THE DECADE The "sunrise" of composer and saxophonist Amit Friedman came after quite a few years when he played as a sideman with many good musicians. Friedman defines himself as an autodidact. Although he studied jazz at Thelma Yellin and took individual lessons here and there, he paved the way for himself. This is probably why his music is so accessible and pleasant to listen to, but not at the expense of depth and... read more
The first notes you catch in the morning often determine your mood throughout the day. One tip: wake up to the tones of American pianist and composer with Palestinian roots Ryan Cohan in his 'The Hours Before Dawn'. A slow unveiling of a whole world that ranges from jazz and classical to influences from the Middle East (Jewish and Arabic) and South America. Music layers that slide over and into each other like tectonic plates in slow... read more
Three years ago, former Tonight Show Band arranger and BBI Elite subscriber Phil Kelly released his Grammy-nominated CD Convergence Zone, which featured his Seattle-based NW Prevailing Winds along with guest musicians from New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville. On My Museum, Kelly leads mostly the cream of LA musician, including four (trumpeter Jay Thomas, trombonist Andy Martin, tenor saxist and TSB alumnus Pete Christlieb, and baritonist Bill... read more
The jazz guitarist Bobby Broom last album was Upper Westside Stories. He packed it with new music, and for the first time fans were able to take in the full range of his writing. It was a wonderful and a daring outing. For Broom's new album My Shining Hour, available August 19th on Origin Records, Broom drummer Makaya McCraven and bassist Dennis Carrol reworks some well-known tunes from the great American Songbook such as "My... read more
I wrote in Jazz Matters about Caliman in a 1979 performance with Freddie Hubbard's band:
As the evening progressed, Caliman's playing took on much of the intensity and coloration of John Coltrane's work, but he is a more directly rhythmic player than Coltrane was toward the end of his life and from that standpoint is reminiscent of Dexter Gordon. Whatever his influences, Caliman is an inventive and cheerful soloist.
Caliman recently... read more
Refractions is a beautiful album, one in which almost everything composer / arranger Kim Richmond touches turns to gold. For one who was largely unimpressed by the Concert Jazz Orchestra's previous endeavors, that's saying a lot. But I'm only too happy to change course and sprinkle praise where it is due. If every album by a "concert orchestra" were as picturesque and persuasive as this one, I'd not hesitate to give all of 'em an... read more
TOP 5 for 2016 Beauty Within, itself a strong contender for my choice of 'album of the year', is another marvelous offering from Dr. Anthony Branker, the most eloquent, socially conscious, interesting and challenging composer/arranger on the scene today, in my humble estimation. This album aptly named for what it is is a work of beauty. In Imagine, Dr. Branker has assembled an upper echelon staff of musicians to give... read more
