5-STARS We have an amazing album. And it is not about the registration of the album signed by a Pole in the USA, surrounded by local giants of the jazz scene, or the world distribution resulting from the fact that it was released by a renowned label, but about the sound and complete negation of the artistic carbon paper.
The faith of Joachim Mencel is not without significance here, often verbalized in musical achievements (e.g. a... read more
5-STARS This two-disc release has come about as a result of Galper sifting through his archives a couple years ago. It was a session well worth rescuing. Although dating back 44 years, it recalls when Galper was already established as a highly-regarded player, almost part of the jazz-scene furniture and thus sometimes unfairly overlooked. This concert (plus one track recorded just a few months later in January 1978) finds him on... read more
The Door opens into a set of fine original compositions and arrangements by Chicago pianist Brand. To some extent this is a family affair, with her husband, Kelly Sill, on bass, and her daughter Naomi guesting on cello, but she gets much of her help from other folks on sax, flute, trumpet, drums, and occasional vocals. Her fourth CD, this is squarely contemporary, with excellent arrangements, tasteful solos, and beautiful melodies throughout.... read more
Chicagoan Maddie Vogler has put together an impressive project with her new album, While We Have Time. Having recently graduated from the University of Illinois, she put together this debut album with a sextet featuring Tito Carrillo on trumpet, Matt Gold on guitar, Jake Shapiro on piano, Samuel Peters on bass and Neil Hemphill on drums. The leadoff track, "The Need to Be" is a fantastic song and arrangement that sounds like a slice of late 60's... read more
Piano-bass-drums. How often have you heard a WEMU host repeat that instrumental combination? More than you can count. Yet, this trio format remains a source of endless variation and fascination. A prime example of the possibilities is the new CD The Endless Mysteries by pianist George Colligan.
You have heard WEMU hosts repeat Colligan's name for twenty years. We discovered him in 1993 as the pianist for saxophonist Ron Holloway. His debut... read more
Last fall, when Seattle's Earshot Jazz Festival invited pianist/vocalist Dawn Clement to serve as artist-in-residence, she knew immediately what she wanted to do.
"How about some duos?" she asked.
The result was a dazzling series of duets with vocalist (and fellow Cornish College of the Arts instructor) Johnaye Kendrick; saxophonist Mark Taylor, with whom Clement co-leads the expandable duo Lineup!; veteran trombonist Julian Priester; and... read more
Rigamarole features electric bass, keyboards, and the swirls of the guitar with saxophone where the melody remains dominant and the band's focus gets rolled up into a contemporary Jazz bag. Bryan Doherty's music has been described as Quiet Storm and contemporary Fusion; however, both terms have become extinct over the years and have seldom been mentioned in the same breath as art. Fashioned after a dreamy Weather Report incantation, the... read more
Drummer John Bishop forms a trio with Bram Weijters/p and Piet Verbist/b for a mix of originals and some jazz covers. The leader shows crisp sticks on boppers like "Ruchsichtslos" and the dramatic modal "Bull" which give Weijters plenty of room to move. Verbist digs in like a man with a pick ax on
'The Same Melody" and links arms with Bishop on a souped up "For Less Than Nothing". Bishops' brushes assuage the lyrical "Pointing At The Moon"... read more
