On her debut album, "This Is a Bird," jazz vocalist Alison Ruble creates an atmosphere where nostalgia and innovation go hand-in-hand.
Even the artwork and album title reflect this. Ruble discovered a box of old letters that her mother and grandmother had written to each other, and snippets of the women's handwriting appear on the cover and in the CD booklet.
"I'm somewhat of a nostalgic person," Ruble says on her cell phone while... read more
On his Origin Records debut, Los Angeles pianist Geoff Stradling makes short work of showing why he was picked by the label. While the focus of Origin is generally on Northwest artists, they have some fair leniency if the music is good, and will pick up exceptional players that might not have been heard before otherwise. In the case of Stradling, you've probably heard him at some point in the past with his performances built in everywhere from... read more
According to Jessica Williams' liner notes, it's a bit of a miracle that this CD even exists. In the last couple of years she has had to deal with the collapse of her lumbar spine and extensive reconstructive surgery, leaving her in a state where she wasn't sure if she would even walk again much less play the piano. Given all that, the fact this solo recital is all at slow tempos is completely understandable. Within that framework her playing... read more
Rich toned trumpeter Jared Hall mixes his own tunes with that of bop master composer Tadd Dameron with his team of Vincent Herring/as, John Hansen/p, Michael Glynn/b and Matt Jorgensen/dr. It's a good call to delve into the underrated Dameron songbook, with two takes of "If You Could See Me Now" featuring sublime conversations between Hall and Hansen. A Latinized "Mating Call" has Herring searing over the pulsations, and a read of the cinema... read more
Cool toned guitarist John Stowell joins with fellow guitarist Ulf Bandgren and his team of Bruno Raberg/b & Austin McMahon/dr for sublime and pastoral musings. Except for the loosely grooved "Ode to Spring," everything here is subtle and water color impressionistic. Raberg's bass plays a pivotal role, gently nudging the fragrances forward as on the thoughtful "Skiss" and laconic "Taughannnock Falls." The two guitarists weave in and out like... read more
4 1/2 STARS Drummer Michael Waldrop has named his inaugural album as leader of a big band Time Within Itself. An even more appropriate name might have been It's About Time. Waldrop, who has taught for the past decade or so at Eastern Washington University, boasts a resume as long as one's arm. It includes a master's degree from the University of Memphis and a doctorate from the University of North Texas where he was a member of the... read more
Although the title of saxophonist Jordan VanHemert's fifth album, Survival of the Fittest, may elicit images of a crash course in self-defense, that is not at all what he had in mind. The music is thematic, he says, and represents the twin lodestars of adversity and resilience. Even that, however, becomes largely irrelevant once VanHemert and his supporting cast launch what is at its heart a narrative of contemporary post-bop... read more
5/5 - "UNMISTAKABLY GREAT" The bassist Arthur Kell is one of the excellent bassists, composers and bandleaders of the New York jazz scene, who has played with almost everyone of rank and name over the last 20 years, including such prominent musicians as Thomas Chapin, Bobby Previte, Marc Ribot, Billy Bang, Bruce Barth and Matt Wilson. His debut album Victoria / Live in Germany, recorded for the Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records... read more
