Lorin Cohen's bass serves as a big woody pulse on all of these original tracks, which he also arranged. The inclusion of Joe Locke's vibes gives the album a bright aura. Add Yvonnick Prene's harmonica and Victor Provost's steel pan, and your ear winds up having a wonderful time. What I love about Cohen's bass is the brightness, his time and love of space. Dig Saudade, a seductive... read more
Seattle-based trumpeter Thomas Marriott plays well with electricity. Specifically, with the Hammond B3 organ. The most memorable of his now nine CDs on Origin Records feature either the Hammond B3 or some serious Moog synthesizer/Fender Rhodes work: Crazy: The Music of Willie Nelson (2007), with Ryan Burns on electric keys; Human Spirit (2009), featuring Gary Versace on B3; and now Return of the East-West Summit, with the versatile George... read more
5/5 - "UNMISTAKABLY GREAT" The trombonist Michael Dease (*1982) is one of today's best jazz trombonists who has recorded numerous first-class albums, especially in the mainstream. What was new for me was that he is also a very good baritone sax player, which he shows on the slow, very groovy "The Goodbye Blues," "Rio Mio" with a Caribbean touch, and the relatively free title track "The Other Shoe" sets in. On The Other Shoe Dease... read more
I've only reviewed one other release from Joel, back in issue # 83; it got high marks, but this new one is absolutely STUNNING! Joel's high-energy, high-talent saxophone work against the haunting vocal work Sienna does brings to mind (strangely enough) some of the best "pop" albums that I grew up with... in fact, they say in the liner notes that this is their idea of what a "pop release" should be. The player list is far too long to itemize... read more
This album is ripe with personality. Every cut evokes the aura of its leader, veteran trombonist Benny Powell. And each cut is different from the one that came before it. With a flexible crew that can navigate some second-line, swing, blues, samba and all things (light) Latin jazz, Nextep doesn't hit you over the head with amazing displays of virtuosity. Instead, the underlying group presence and unpretentious nature of the program stays... read more
It takes all of five bars for a ring modulator to slink, unassumingly, and rather unexpectedly, into the opening track of Seattle-based pianist Bill Anschell's newest work. A few seconds on, when guitarist Brian Monroney flicks his strings like Avi Bortnick on one of John Scofield's Überjam records, the album title falls into place: Improbable Solutions. There's no saying what "problem" this excellent album is bent on solving, but its... read more
Lynn Bush turns out to be "the girl with something extra" on her new Origin release, Still Life (Origin 82394). A smart trio, a smart repertoire and a smart singer all add up to a smart... read more
he Trio is guitarist Bobby Broom, drummer Greg Rockingham and Chris Forman on the Hammond. Don't let the title fool you. These are cool jazzy blues packed with soul. Broom steps up on "The Chant" and "She's Leaving Home" with fine solos. Chris is at the center of the action in most cases and he doesn't disappoint with well-developed solos that build intensity. These guys are not showboating, they just get it done, paying attention to the details... read more
