Bobby Broom - My Shining Hour
by Matthias Kirsch, Gina Love Jazz (Berlin)

A collection of nine standards is the latest album by guitarist Bobby Broom. But this is not your typical standard fare - there is a Frederick Loewe song that hasn't been recorded very often ("The Heather On The Hill") and all of the tracks come to life by the shining arrangements for his trio which includes Dennis Carroll on bass and Makaya McCraven on drums.

Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen were responsible for recording his first album... read more

Bobby Broom - Song And Dance
by DF, Vintage Guitar

When he was 25, Bobby Broom was picked by jazz legend Kenny Burrell to be part of this Jazz Guitar Band, whose stint at New York's Village Vanguard resulted in two albums. By then, Broom had moved from his native New York to Chicago and already logged sessions with Dizzy Gillespie, Stanley Turrentine, and Sonny Rollins.

He later held down a five-year stint with Dr. John, and reunited with Rollins for last year's stellar Sonny Please,... read more

John Bishop with Jeff Johnson, Rick Mandyck, John Stowell - Scenes
by Dick Crockett, The Voice

A new delight from OriginArts; John Bishop/Jeff Johnson/Rick Mandyck/John Stowell and "Scenes." They play McCoy Tyner’s "Blues On The Corner" in this segment with dedication, no shuck and jive, straight ahead. You know by listening these guys enjoy playing together. Rick Mandyck and John Stowell acheive a similar saxophone/guitar convergence as did Paul Desmond and Jim Hall in "Take Ten." It makes you think of flying up to Seattle/Tacoma... read more

Geof Bradfield - melba!
by Robert Ratajczak, LongPlay: RadioJAZZ - Poland

[translated from Polish] Melba Liston (1926-1999) is one of the icons of American jazz. Composer and arranger since the early 1960s, she collaborated with many including Randy Weston, Dexter Gordon, Dizzy Gillespie (Dizzy Gillespie at Newport), Art Blakey and Charles Mingus (the famous album The Complete Town Hall Concert). Despite the enormous contribution to the sound of countless jazz standards, she always remained in the... read more

Eric Jacobson - Heading Home
by Paul Rauch, All About Jazz

4-STARS Trumpeter Eric Jacobson has settled in on the Chicago club scene, making musical alliances along the way that include the very top tier of that talent rich scene. For his latest venture into the studio, he employs the talents of master tenorist Geof Bradfield, Chicago first call bassist Dennis Carroll and the always swinging George Fludas on drums. At first glance, this session looks like a cannot miss proposition. After one... read more

Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestra - Without a Trace
by Suzanne Lorge, Downbeat Magazine

REEVES' BIG BAND BALANCE

IT WASN'T UNTIL TROMBONIST/ALTO flugelhornist Scott Reeves moved to New York City in 1999 that he began to compose and arrange at the level he'd always envisioned. "I'm either a late bloomer or a slow learner," he joked after the May 12 release concert for Without A Trace (Origin), his second big band album, at Smalls. Or maybe he's the best kind of bandleader - one who's learned how to do it all.

To be... read more

Rodney Whitaker - All Too Soon: The Music of Duke Ellington
by Editor, Dusty Grooves

A very fresh take on the songs of Duke Ellington - presented here by bassist Rodney Whitaker, with a tight combo sound that resonates strongly with his other great records! The tunes are definitely Duke's, but the presentation is pure Whitaker - hip, soulful, and reworked with nicely contemporary elements - played by a strong lineup that features Michael Dease on trombone, Brian Lynch on trumpet, Diego Rivera on tenor, Richard Roe on... read more
