Les DeMerle - Hot Night In Venice: Live at The Venice Jazz Club
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

Recorded at the Venice Jazz Club in Italy back in 2014, this album is a swinging affair with drummer, vocalist and leader Les DeMerle leading a trio with Johannes Bjerregaard/p and Chris Luard snapping through some standards and occasionally joined by the big band era influence vocalist Bonnie Eisele on an anthological gig of American tunes.

In the trio format, Bjerregard taps into his inner Bobby Timmons for a gospel driven "Down By The... read more

Doug Beavers 9 - Two Shades of Nude
by Ric Erben, Jazz Junction Review

Trombonist Doug Beavers has released an outstanding album that features spirited arrangements and soloing upon original compositions as well as music from other jazz composers. In Phil Woods parlance, this is a "little big band" as the instrumentation achieves a rich tonal pallet, sounding both tight and loose at the same time. Beavers has played in the Mingus Big Band and toured with Eddie Palmieri; and has found inspiration in the works of... read more

David Friesen - Day of Rest
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

The bass man makes a solo piano set on a Ravenscroft piano where all the tracks are solo miniatures that seem improvised but probably have a ton of composition behind them. It's just that he makes it all look and sound so easy. You try and duplicate it! Call it a throw back to new age piano solo if you need to but it really is instrumental music that exists on a plane all of it's own. Well done by a real... read more

Peter Lerner - Continuation
by Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

Guitarist Peter Lerner hasn't reached Broom's level of recognition, but he surely has outdone himself with his newest release, Continuation (Origin Records). Though he sounds strong in solo passages, it's the band he leads and the strength of his compositions that make the deepest impression here. With pianist Willie Pickens playing a leonine role throughout the recording and Robert Irving III serving as producer, "Continuation"... read more

Jessica Williams - Songs of Earth
by John Henry, Audiophile Audition

I think this is the finest solo piano CD I?ve enjoyed in years! ***** 5-stars

Jessica Williams is one of the top jazz pianists playing today, and if you?re a jazz piano fan and not familiar with her work, remedy that right away. She had classical training and was the house pianist at San Francisco?s Keystone Korner for many years. Jessica has been a three-time Grammy nominee. She is currently based in Seattle, and this new CD... read more

Ziggurat Quartet - Calculated Gestures
by Nenim Iwebuke, Afropop Worldwide

Nigerian-born, London-raised, Brooklyn-based saxophonist, composer and producer Zem Audu is no novice to the music industry. While working closely with notable names like Hugh Masekela, Jason Moran and Lauryn Hill over the years, the Skatalites band member has ingested a variety of genres: contemporary jazz, ska, reggae, funk, soul and r&b.

Zem's new album, Spirits (Origin Records), is a fusion of his life experiences: his roots in... read more

Kobie Watkins - Involved
by Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

Finally, drummer Kobie Watkins segues from hard bop to jazz funk to unabashedly romantic balladry in his CD "Involved" (Origin Records). If the constantly shifting jazz languages point to a young musician perhaps trying a bit too hard to show everything he can do, Watkins nonetheless handles it all. He benefits from hard-charging contributions from a cast of Chicago all-stars, particularly saxophonists Jarrard Harris and Geof Bradfield,... read more

David Friesen with Orchestra and Quartet - Testimony
by Chris Lunn, Ancient Victorys

These recordings were made in December 2018 with the National Academic Symphonic Band of Ukraine in Kiev and the Quartet cuts in 2019 at the Institute of Music in Kiev. All seventeen compositions are by David Friesen. Great to hear Friesen's orchestral and quartet work showcased on the same recording. Compositions range from a couple minutes to his classic "Lament for the Lost/Procession" at six minutes.

"Still Waters" has bold piano chords... read more
