Like so many jazz guitarists, Shawn Purcell was awed by the playing of Pat Martino, whose classic album El Hombre truly opened his ears to the possibilities of the guitar-organ trio. And certainly, Martino's influence echoes throughout 180 (Origin), the Washington, D.C.-based Purcell's most recent release. Teaming up with organ virtuoso Pat Bianchi and drum phenom Jason Tiemann, Purcell explores and updates the dynamics of the classic organ... read more
Chicago has it's own brand of skronk and this set with a a stellar Chicago crew in tow might not sound like Sonny Rollins playing under a bridge but he certainly knows how to deliver the goods. Using mainstream jazz as a starting point rather than a destination, he marshals his chops to bring listeners into the tent and keep them on board. A tasty collective effort that hits all the right notes with loads of daddio and modern in the mix, Wojo... read more
These recordings were made in December 2018 with the National Academic Symphonic Band of Ukraine in Kiev and the Quartet cuts in 2019 at the Institute of Music in Kiev. All seventeen compositions are by David Friesen. Great to hear Friesen's orchestral and quartet work showcased on the same recording. Compositions range from a couple minutes to his classic "Lament for the Lost/Procession" at six minutes.
"Still Waters" has bold piano chords... read more
Lincoln Goines is a consummate bassist and renowned educator who has been a mainstay of the New York City scene for decades. Originally from Oakland, the bassist quickly found his groove in the Big Apple in the '70s, where he got to work with Idris Muhammad, Dave Valentin, Paquito D'Rivera, Dizzy Gillespie, Bob Mintzer, and many more. Between his steady performances, recording, and teaching at Berklee College of Music, Goines has always kept... read more
Although trumpeter Brad Goode's last years were spent in Colorado, his musical consciousness is always associated with a distinctive Chicago jazz sound. Goode recently returned to his native Chicago, where he graduated years ago from DePaul University, and recorded his first album. Currently, there are weekly concerts at the legendary Green Mill club with local musicians (such as Von Freeman playing there every week until the end of the 90's,... read more
Guitarist Shawn Purcell found himself captivated by the six-string sound of the legendary Pat Martino. He's also loves the Hammond organ and the sound it makes within the context of the jazz trio. And so, we arrive at 180, a record that's solid and smooth enough to be mistaken for a granite countertop. Purcell's guitar tone is slightly muted and occasionally just a bit overdriven, which helps it cut through the groovy but gentle din created by... read more
Right off the bat, let's get to this rather unwieldy title. According to the album notes, the group recorded an untitled tune in 13/4 time. Acknowledging the challenge of such a meter, one of the players stated "all the more reason to fear the number 13." And that, apparently, is what this 17 letter word means: fear of the number 13. Okay with me, although I couldn't find it in my dictionary. Anyway, it's nice to see a younger generation... read more
The recordings of the album are taken from a live performance at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem on June 27, 2023. With "Persistence Of Memory" the sextet around woodwind player Alon Farber opens. The Ensemble Hagiga and guest Dave Douglas are characterized by an impressive brass power, consisting of a trumpeter, a trombonist, a soprano and alto saxophonist and a tenor saxophonist or clarinetist. In tutti they almost sound like a small big band. At... read more
