Big Neighborhood - Neighbors
by Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz

This sax/bass/guitar/drums quartet struck me on first listen as a group that Steely Dan might hire for a recording session. The sound is crisp and clean, modern, with sharp lines and well-defined, ear-grabbing tangents. And democratic, as opposed to a sax-in-front-of-a-rhythm section affair. Then I heard some Pat Metheny shadings when guitarist David White brings the guitar synthesizer into the mix; but the sound is friskier than Metheny's, the... read more

Kobie Watkins - Involved
by Oscar Groomes, O's Place Jazz.com

Drummer Kobie Watkins leads a band with James Austin (p), Clark Sommers (b) and several talented musicians playing brass. Guitarist Bobby Broom is featured on "Expressions", the best of four Watkins originals. We also enjoyed "Congo" with Pharez Whitted (t) and Ryan Cohen on the keys. Geof Bradfield plays sax on five tracks notably the hot blues of "Third Pew". The pace and mode are varied but Kobie is always Involved with tight beats on drums... read more

Matt Jorgensen + 451 - Another Morning
by Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

Despite the greats who spent time developing their craft in Seattle during a previous era (Ray Charles, Quincy Jones), today's Seattle jazz scene is a relatively young one compared to other, more established sounds. As such, perhaps it's fitting that fusion can play a part in it from time to time. Drummer Matt Jorgensen is one of those at the forefront of the fusion movement within the area, putting jazz and rock aesthetics together fluidly... read more

Tom Rizzo - Day and Night
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

An ace guitarist that can play with the shimmering lines of Joshua Breakstone or Pat Martino covers songs even though he can write interesting stuff and calls in first call hands to lend a hand because it's obvious he cares. A solid, swinging date that sure to delight jazz guitar fans, everything you could want in a smoking performance is delivered here. Well done... read more

Scenes - Along the Way
by Ric Bang, The Davis Enterprise

Scenes, another Pacific Northwest group, began as a quartet: guitarist Johhn Stowell, bassist Jeff Johnson, drummer John Bishop and tenor saxman Rick Mandyck. When a health problem forced Mandyck to depart, the group continued as a trio.

"Along The Way" is the new group's first release.

Each musician is well-known in the jazz fraternity, and all have played and recorded with numerous "name" groups.

All the tracks on the CD are originals... read more

Kelly Sill / Jim McNeely / Joel Spencer - Boneyard
by Phillip McNally, Cadence Oct-Dec 2007

Jim McNeely is of course one of the reigning masters of mainstream Jazz piano, with a pedigree that includes time with the Jones-Lewis Band and with Joe Henderson. I first heard him behind Stan Getz on a night when he stole the show from the fussy saxophone maestro. On "Boneyard" he is, as you would expect, tasteful, neat, in the pocket yet never glib. His playing is particularly lovely on "Naomi" and "in the Wee Small Hours," where his touch is... read more

Dan Dean - Songs Without Words
by Chris Lunn, Ancient Victorys

This is an unusual and special project. Dan Dean is known for his own groups, recording and mixing, and his collaborations with Tom Collier. I first encountered his works with a couple of different groups at the Other Side of the Tracks in the mid 70s along with his work with Collier, with whom he has been musical buddies even in their teenage years. His bass work and sound is found in many recording groups and engineers, because of Dean's... read more

Tim Davies Big Band - The Expensive Train Set
by George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

Drummer Tim Davies leads two different bands here, one from Los Angeles, USA and the other from Melbourne, Australia, and they both swing with class. For the California band, the horn sections show lots of punch on "Minor Incidents" and the moody and richly textured title track as Brian Owen/tp and Jacques Voyemant/tb contribute rich solos. The Aussies do a hip rework of the classic "Sing Sing Sing" with Tony Hicks' clarinet and the reeds do... read more
