David Sills - Eastern View
by Scott Yanow, L.A. Jazz Scene

Jazz fans who go regularly to jazz clubs such as Spazio will recognize the names of the musicians on this CD: tenor-saxophonist David Sills, guitarist Larry Koonse, organist Joe Bagg and drummer Tim Pleasant. Each of the musicians are fixtures in the Los Angeles area yet surprisingly the ten originals written by Sills for this CD were composed during a two-year period when he earning his Masters degree at the Manhattan School of Music.... read more

Thomas Marriott - Romance Language
by Nigel Jarrett, Jazz Journal (London)

Jazz might be called the art of theme and variations, the art applying as much to the theme as the way a musician plays around with it. Everyone knows the themes, the tunes, whether written by a jazz composer/musician or someone working in a showbiz area considered not unadjacent. But rarely does anyone devote as much attention to the tune as unadorned entity as trumpeter Thomas Marriott does on this generally slow-tempo album.

If there is... read more

Rodney Whitaker - Outrospection: The Music of Gregg Hill
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

Michigan bassist Rodney Whitaker gives tribute to the pen of fellow statesman Gregg Hill on this classy post bop album teaming the leader with Xavier Davis/p, Dana Hall-Randy Gelispie/dr, Diego Rivera-Marcus Elliot/sax, Randy Napoleon/g, Michael Dease/tb, Etienne Charles/tp and Rockelle Whitaker. The result is a lyrical mix of moods that keep a smile on your face. Ms Whitaker soulfully struts with Rivera's tenor on "New Sunday" and blossoms on... read more

Karrin Allyson - A Kiss for Brazil
by Paul Abella, WDCB, Chicago

Vocalist Karrin Allyson has now made three albums focusing on the music of Brazil: 1999's From Paris to Rio, Imagina - Songs of Brazil in 2007, and now in 2024, A Kiss for Brazil. She's clearly very comfortable with the material, and that makes this newest album a treat. She's joined by an excellent group with Vitor Concalves on keys and accordion, Yotam Silberstein on guitar, Harvie S on bass and Rafael Barata on drums. There are Brazilian... read more

John Stowell and Dave Liebman - Blue Rose
by Chris Lunn, Ancient Victorys

Stowell, for the mid-late 70s jazz shows at the Tracks in Auburn, is on a roll of CD releases. We reviewed another duet in the Fall 2013 issue with Throop, and in April he tours the Northwest with our Kendra Shank to support a duet CD they are completing. Here, he teams with Dave Liebman on soprano, tenor, piano, and wood flute. They did a trio thing in Banff Jazz Workshop with Don Thompson, and that is captured and also available on... read more

James Moody - 80 Years Young: Live at the Blue Note, March 26, 2005
by Scott Yanow, L.A. Jazz Scene

Everyone loved James Moody (1925-2010). He came to his musical maturity during the bebop era, playing tenor and alto including with the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and in the 1960s with Gillespie's quintet. Moody continued to evolve through the years, taking up the flute and soprano while developing his own distinctive sound on all of his instruments. Always a good-humored and witty performer, particularly during his later years, Moody usually... read more

Nanami Haruta - The Vibe
by Doug Collette, Glide Magazine

The sleek tones of Nanami Haruta's trombone appropriately suffuse The Vibe as she and five other musicians wend their way patiently but authoritatively through eleven tracks recorded, mixed, and mastered by Corey DeRushia. That sensitive engineering emphasizes all the individual instruments, including Michael Dease's horns, Xavier Davis' piano, and the graceful rhythm section of bassist Rodney Whitaker and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. The... read more

Emi Meyer - Monochrome
by Bobby Reed, Downbeat

With her U.S. debut, Monochrome, singer-songwriter Emi Meyer has crafted a gem that will greatly expand her international fan base. Born in Kyoto to a Japanese mother and an American father, the Tokyo-based Meyer has released several albums in Japan, and her music has appeared on the soundtrack to Japanese director Nobuhiro Doi's film Flying Colors and in the States on the TV shows Awkward and Younger. Though Meyer has often sung... read more
