I have long admired bassist Harvie S. He has lots of records as a leader. But I like his sideman work probably more. So what about this latest album as leader?
It benefits from the presence of Peter Bernstein. The M.T.B. guitar icon's presence kind of sold me on it - the other players are pianist Miki Hayama whose work I greatly admired heard on Nnenna Freelon's Time Traveler and drummer Matt Wilson whose brushwork on 'Devil May Care' is... read more
You could safely describe 'Carrier' as the guitar album of a drummer. Xavier Lecouturier delivers only five of the ten compositions while his guitarist takes care of three. Bassist ( Ben Feldman ) and pianist ( Gus Carns ) each also wrote a song. A generous group leader who rather plays the role of game distributor and gives his fellow musicians a lot of room. Lucas Winter uses a guitar style in the line of Larry Coryell and Kurt Rosenwinkel. He... read more
I wanted to mention how much I am enjoying the 2021 album "Rain Painting" by John Stowell & Dan Dean. Modernity meets tradition in this collection of Stowell's compositions and Dean's wordless vocal arrangements and bass playing. The guitar, bass and vocal sounds are all very much in keeping with the heritage of the jazz style. And Stowell's playing swings like crazy. His improvisation is unfailingly melodic and he doesn't tend to repeat himself... read more
Certainly one of 2017's more offbeat releases, The Pythiad refers not to Pythias, wife of Aristotle, but to the Pythia, the high priestess of the oracle at Delphi. Here, in the singing and speech of Cheryl Wilson, she recounts the stories of some of the lesser-known figures of ancient Greek mythology, functioning as a kind of psychotherapist figure. Wilson forges a matter-of-fact, but not-easy-to-achieve vocal simplicity that avoids jazz idioms... read more
The title delivers what it promises: a generous portion of groove that hits you from the very first bar. Indeed, Ben Patterson's search for the perfect groove was his goal when producing the album: "What is groove?" asks the bandleader in the description, and immediately offers a suggested answer: "Groove is essentially a study, a discipline, and an art that transcends style. It's a way of communicating..." Patterson is inspired by genres such... read more
5-STARS Saxophonist Michael Zilber has an unusual geographic history. He was born in Vancouver, Canada before moving to Boston as a teenager. He moved to New York and worked with Sonny Sitt, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Liebman, Dave Douglas, Rachel Z and Narada Michael Walden among many. While In New York, he recorded two critically acclaimed albums, The Heretic and Stranger In Brooklyn as a sole band leader. But his career has been anchored... read more
Relatively few women embrace the acoustic bass; Marlene Rosenberg ? a ?territory? artist born, raised and schooled in Illinois ? has done just that.
Although she has played professionally throughout the world, she performs and teaches primarily around Chicago. She began studying clarinet at the age of 10, switched to electric bass in high school, and finally settled on the acoustic instrument while attending the University of Illinois. She... read more
"Blood may be thicker than water, but you can't live without water."
-Novelist Jane Porter
While the members of Deep Blue Organ Trio were not brought together by shared parentage, guitarist Bobby Broom, drummer Chris Rockingham and organist Chris Foreman share a closeness, mutual respect, and loyalty that many families would envy. Their bond and brotherhood extends beyond their music. These men love what they do and they love the men that they... read more
