John Stowell - Solitary Tales
by John Barron, All About Jazz

An entire disc of solo, improvised guitar music could easily run the risk of sounding like one continuous tune. Fortunately, Portand, Oregon-based guitarist John Stowell applies enough depth and open-minded searching to his nylon-string guitar to keep things interesting throughout Solitary Tales. The eleven-track disc was recorded live at the home of master guitar luthier Mike Doolin, who builds guitars for Stowell. Relying heavily on... read more

Bobby Rozario - Healer
by Dee Dee McNeil, Making A Scene

A jazz/blues guitar opens this production. It saturates my listening room with a blues 'riff.' Then voices enter, chanting the title of this album, "Healer." Bobby Rozario plays guitar, timbales and is the lead singer on this tune. He is of Indian and Brazilian-Portuguese descent, as well as a third-generation musician. This is his second album recorded on the Origin Label. The first was called "Spellbound."

Mentored by his parents in... read more

Brad Wheeler - The Future Was Yesterday
by Robert Laxtague, Jazz Magazine France

One notices immediately after listening to this cd the influence of the disciples of Coltrane. Brad Wheeler, an unique tenor saxophonist, has a strong sound, with a soft vibrato. A Chicago musician, he has the blues in his playing, joined by an appropriate guitarist. Near to Von Freeman, often present next to Kurt Elling, arranger and teacher known in the city of great lakes, he constructs in his first cd under his own name, a Jazz which isn't... read more

Martin Budde - Back Burner
by Ferdinand Dupuis-Panther, Jazz'halo (Belgium)

Let's read what Origin Records has to say about Martin Budde: "... Seattle guitarist Martin Budde steers his trio through a collection of mostly original compositions on his f'rst Origin recording. Thoroughly rooted in the fluid, modern jazz guitar sounds of the last 50 years, ... Drummer Xavier Lecouturier and bassist Ben Feldman are his longtime collaborators in the more densely eclectic modern jazz sextet Meridian Odyssey, and here they... read more

Hadley Caliman | Pete Christlieb - Reunion
by Bill Donaldson, Cadence

As happens more often than not, two friends who spent much time together in early adulthood went their separate ways as the demands and opportunities of careers and families took priority. In the case of Pete Christlieb and Hadley Caliman, who performed together for two years at Marty's in Los Angeles in the 1960s, their separation was resolved when they met again in 2009 in Seattle to record, appropriately enough, a Reunion.

Bob Sneider & Joe Locke - Nocturne for Ava
by Jay Collins, Cadence

Nocturne For Ava is the second release from the Film Noir Project, guitarist Bob Sneider and vibraphonist Joe Locke's homage to Noir classics and other dark-hued compositions that offer a cinematic ambiance. Whereas the group's debut, Fallen Angel (Sons of Sound) conjured a dark, atmospheric setting matching its title, this second record expands the group's range, offering less strict mood music (in a good way) and more in the Jazz vein. To... read more

Nnenna Freelon - Time Traveler
by Alex Henderson, The New York City Jazz Record

Nnenna Freelon was in the middle of recording Time Traveler, her first new album in over a decade, when her husband of 40 years died from Lou Gehrig's disease in 2019 and it ended up becoming a tribute both to her partner and the R&B and pop of the '60s and '70s. The album gets off to an R&B-drenched start with

the Burt Bacharach-Hal David favorite "I Say a Little Prayer". Freelon's "Marvin Medley" is billed as a tribute to soul icon... read more

Benjamin Boone | Philip Levine - The Poetry of Jazz
by Robert Rusch, Cadence

BENJAMIN BOONE [as/ss] and PHILIP LEVINE [poetry/voice]: THE POETRY OF JAZZ is a terrific CD of jazz and text with tributes to Rollins, Clifford Brown, Coltrane and Bird. 11 of the 14 compositions are by
Boone and a pool of 7 musicians make up the backing on tunes. In addition, Chris Potter [ts], Tom Harrell [tpt], Branford Marsalis [ts], and Greg Osby [as] make guest appearances on one track each. Levine [1928-2015] was a former United States... read more
