4-STARS If trumpeter Eric Jacobson's name doesn't ring a bell, it could be because he is based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, not in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles or any other jazz mecca. What's more, Jacobson has not recorded often; Discover is only his second date as leader or co-leader. Hindrances aside, Jacobson's is a name with which one should become familiar, as he is an excellent trumpeter and composer, and Discover is splendid... read more
Thomas Marriott, a Seattle-based trumpet and flugelhorn player, assembles a top-notch band from his hometown and, supplementing it with New York vibraphonist Joe Locke for two tracks, produces a disc that will put the Emerald City on the jazz map.
Marriott not only has a signature sound individually -- tuneful during solos, lyrical even when he plays at accelerated tempos -- he achieves a group sound as well. He often forms unison horn lines... read more
Jazz has become a truly international art form in the new millennium, and some of its most creative players now come from places like Zagreb, Croatia. What makes Matija Dedic special is his touch and the way his poetic concept unfolds and deepens over the course of an album. Dedic is as seductive as Tord Gustavsen. The opening of the first track here, "Her Name," could be Gustavsen. It has that hush, the keys barely touched, the simple... read more
Rodney Whitaker, a towering figure in jazz bass performance and education, has long been celebrated for his multifaceted musicianship and deep understanding of the genre. Mosaic: The Music of Gregg Hill is the latest collaboration between Whitaker and composer Gregg Hill. This album marks the fourth installment of their musical partnership, further solidifying their bond as one of modern jazz's most exciting creative forces. With Whitaker's... read more
Solo piano albums just leave me entranced. They have the ability to sound as expansive as the sea and just as deep, while also revealing an intimate fragility that can be as endearing as the former quality is awe-inspiring.
Culling recordings from solo performances recorded over a three year stretch at Seattle?s Triple Door, pianist Jessica Williams displays those same characteristics in the mesmerizing Songs of Earth.
There is an element... read more
"A Mind for the Scenery" provides Portland, Oregon-based woodwind artist and arranger Tim Jensen with a broad canvas on which to lay out his considerable talents. This CD is the second solo effort by Jensen; otherwise, he stays busy in and around the Pacific Northwest as a guest artist and sideman, and also tours with singers and stage shows.
In this CD, Jensen presents himself on most of the current jazz woodwind arsenal: soprano, alto,... read more
Stowell's guitar joins Kevin Woods' trumpet and flugelhorn and Miles Black's piano. Woods' "Few Regrets" opens with warm guitar and lyrical piano then moves into a floating mid tempo. Woods' horn is warm, low-end and lyrical moving in a very Chet Baker/Mulligan tight warmness. Guitar touches with amazing odd chords, and then the piano warmly and lyrically dances the tune. Woods also penned "Solo En Viento Sabe" with the odd, darting, off-angle... read more
Jesse Dockx, drummer extraordinaire from Belgium, helped to found this absolutely tasty jazz trio, and with his mentors & mates Piet Verbist (bass) and Lieven Cambre (saxophone), they put together some tunes you won't soon forget... a "prime" example of that is the 5:26 "To Remember"... great drum intro from Jesse, with his partners weaving in right before the one minute mark... you'll listen to this one over & over again (this reminds me quite... read more
