Florian Hoefner - Luminosity
by Chris Maskell, Ottawa Citizen

Pianist Florian Hoefner's latest release Luminosity, which was released last week, is partly an ode to St. John's, Newfoundland. Although the native of Germany says that he was only "subconsciously" inspired by his new place of residence, the album's dramatic melodies and rolling grooves bring images of the area's stunning landscapes to mind right from the start.

Like many great jazz composers, Hoefner wrote the record's music with his band... read more

Peter Erskine & The JAM Music Lab All-Stars - Vienna to Hollywood: Impressions of E.W. Korngold & Max Steiner
by Tom Haugen, Take Effect

Peter Erskine and his crew tip their hat to the work of two Viennese composers, E.W. Korngold and Max Steiner, and it makes for a diverse and intricate 12 songs.

The energetic "March Of The Merry Men" starts the listen with Erskine's marching band style drumming alongside Thomas Gansch's vibrant trumpet, and "Sterbelied" follows with Danny Grissett's gentle piano and Fabricio Pereira's calm bass setting an intimate mood.

Further along,... read more

Hugo Fernandez - Cosmogram
by Gabriel Carvalho, Music on the Run (Portugal)

Western Jazz Collective - Dark Journey: The Music of Andrew Rathbun
by Jack Bowers, All About Jazz

The Western Jazz Collective is a seven-member co-op group that actually hails from America's Midwest—more specifically, Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo—where the ensemble's crew serve as members of the faculty. The designation "Western" thus refers to the university rather than the septet's geographic location.

Be that as it may, what infuses and animates the Collective's debut album, Dark Journey, is the music, all of... read more

Hal Galper Trio - The Zone: Live at the Yardbird Suite
by Suzanne Lorge, DownBeat

4-STARS When pianist Hal Galper first heard the live recording that became The Zone: Live At The Yardbird Suite, he didn't recognize his own playing. On that November 2016 gig—at the eponymous club in Edmonton, Canada—"the music came from some place deeper," Galper wrote in the album's liner notes. The bandleader, who's a long way from his 1970s electrified workouts on the Mainstream imprint, called that place "the zone," where the... read more

Les DeMerle - Hittin' the Blue Notes, Volume 2
by Dick Crockett, Sacramento Radio

A nu-bop version to what's happening then...now! This is hard bop with a west coast swinging so grab your sweet other's hand and do some half time. This is more physical, then cerebral Bacchus celebration. We played Bobby Troup's "Route 66." Let's be clear about this, De Merle would bring the house down in Vegas with this DeMerle-a-la-mena. You open and ratchet up a first listen on this new one and you'll know for sure. The DeMerle Band jumps,... read more

Michael Waldrop Big Band - Time Within Itself
by George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

Drummer Michael Waldrop leads a hefty 17 piece band along with a handful of guests on this rich collection of originals. The moods mix from a fusion " Tunnell Vision which features Jim Tunnell's electric guitar to full and glowing harmonies which feature Walddrop on vibes for "Inner Truth." A clever military march includes Sandra Dudley's vocals and Tim Ishii's alto on "Her Moon Rises East" and some Bill Evans Trio inspired piano work is... read more

Florian Hoefner - Luminosity
by Chris Spector, Midwest Review

Furthering his dominance in the sitting down piano jazz field, Hoefner and his long time pals add a vet new kid to the mix on sax as the newly expanded four piece crew seem to assert ownership over cinematic playing that commands your full attention. Practically playing as one, weaving things so seamlessly that they get past you as you get lost in it, this is what so many other ensembles aspire to. Well done stuff with all the sounds your head... read more
