C'mon, albums like this write their own reviews. Rosenberg surrounded by Kenny Barron and Lewis Nash with Chris McBride and Robert Irving lurking in the background? What else is there to say? With music informed by years of knowing each other and living now in unsettling times akin to the good old civil rights days, this is a bridge date that links the 60s and now almost without saying a word. Meaty jazz that doesn't have to be at the top of... read more
Bassist Friesen is a marquee name and joined here by fellow bassist Glen Moore, they divvy up the channels, Friesen left, Moore right, and like the two humped camel of the title, (occasionally with piano ), they wend their way across musical landscapes. Bass is hard to play on the radio, the fidelity of the sound both as transmitted and received can be unpredictable, and these are basically bass duets. Having said that, these tunes are rich,... read more
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Bright Dawn, from Harvie S and it's light and flowing. Opening with Ghosts of Havana, Miki Hayama on Fender Rhodes creates the fabric on which Peter Bernstein builds the guitar rich melody. Matt Wilson holds a tight rein on the rhythm and Harvie S lays out a really nice solo on bass for a solid opener. Waltz For Vartan showcases Harvie leading the way on bass. Flowing guitar lead by... read more
After earning high praise from Dave Liebman, Zilber redefines what ambition and drive mean by coming forth with a twofer that features a bicoastal recording in which the sax man pulls out all the stops in arranging for big band. Highlighting what makes each coast special rather than pitting them against each other, this is a modern monster of a set where the blowing is unbridled and uncontained fiercely sending a joyful noise up through he... read more
4 1/2 STARS The trio recordings released by pianist Hal Galper between 2006 and 2014 - six discs, all but one on Origin Records—plowed fresh ground. Each disc dug deeply into the "Rubato" form. Taken as a whole - from 2006's Agents Of Change (Fabola Records) through 2014's O's Time (Origin Records) - the full series represents a monumental, sharply focused project that, for those who listened, redefined the piano trio.

Portland has always enjoyed a wealth of superb jazz pianists. And what was consistently top tier got even better when George Colligan became part of the music faculty at Portland State University. His new CD, his first for Seattle-based Origin Records, is a trio gig with two masterful colleagues, Larry Grenadier on bass and Jack De Johnette on drums. All 10 selections were composed by Colligan who, in the liner notes, provides an explanation for... read more
In the vast cosmos of jazz, some stars burn with a peculiar brilliance, their light flickering in patterns that challenge conventional rhythms and harmonies. Michael Dease's Found in Space: The Music of Gregg Hill is an album that explores this astral territory, guided by Gregg Hill's compositions. Released by Origin Records on September 20, 2024, this project is a tribute to Hill's intricate, genre-defying work, showcasing Dease's extraordinary... read more
Record of the Week The idea to record an album in the USA with musicians recognized there is not something particularly original in the jazz world. However, few have enough courage and determination to make their dreams come true, and even fewer musicians manage to create a musically interesting album. Joachim Mencel, who not only invited excellent musicians to work with him, which in some cases is only dependent on having a sufficiently... read more
