Chad McCullough | Michal Vanoucek - The Sky Cries
by Ken Watkins, Greatest Jazz Blog

As in last year's excellent 'Dark Wood, Dark Water', Chad McCullough teams up with saxophonist Mark Taylor ? also featured on Randy Halberstadt's recent 'Flash Point' - and two other mainstays of the North West jazz scene, Dave Captein (bass) and Matt Jorgensen (drums). The added dimension on 'The Sky Cries' is Slovakian pianist Michal Vanoucek.

It is probably too easy to say that Michal Vanoucek brings a classical European sensibility (the... read more

Storms/Nocturnes - VIA
by Doug Simpson, Audiophile Audition

Saxophonist Tim Garland, pianist Geoffrey Keezer and vibraphonist Joe Locke ? who use the suggestive nomenclature Storms/Nocturnes ? have spent much time together but it has been seven years since the threesome have booked time to record, so their new album, Via, is a welcome return. The three friends first performed on Garland's 2000 solo release, Made by Walking, soon after Garland had joined Chick Corea's band Origin. Keezer, Garland and... read more

Steve Million - Remembering The Way Home
by Thomas Conrad, JazzTimes, Jan/Feb 09

This album came about because Steve Million (a five-night-a-week working jazz pianist in Chicago) began studying classical music again. He says that the experience took him back to an early version of his playing, before he had committed himself to jazz. Remembering the Way Home is an attempt to capture the freshness of Million's first discoveries of music, filtered through the knowledge and skills he has since gained.

It works. This... read more

Kiki Valera - Vivencias en Clave Cubana
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

Cuban sounds of joy are delivered by Kiki Valera, who plays cuatro, guitar and percussion as he features the bel canto voice of Coco Freeman and a snappy team of Alex Baro/tp, Jose Alayo-Yanill Nario/b, Pedro Vargas/perc and guest vocalists Carlos Cascante, Joshuah De Jesus and Steve Guasch. The tunes are mostly composed by Valera and Freeman and are sizzling affairs with rich grooves and bright trumpet solos on pieces like "Mi Son" and... read more

Karrin Allyson - A Kiss for Brazil
by Editor, Modern Drummer

Singer Karrin Allyson has sung all sorts of jazz, and this time around she has turned her attention to Brazilian jazz music. For this recent excursion she has enlisted the perfect Brazilian rhythm section. Holding down the pulse are drummer Rafael Barata and bassist Harvey S. While pianist Vitor Goncalves and guitarist Yotam Silberstein provide the floating harmony over Allyson's gliding vocals. Barata has become the first call drummer for... read more

Brad Goode - Polytonal Big Band: The Snake Charmer
by Thierry De Clemensat, Paris Move

*INDISPENSABLE* If the quality of the albums we received in 2024 showed steady improvement, the offerings of 2025 have, from the very start of the year, unleashed a veritable explosion of multifaceted talent. Among these, we find Brad Goode—a trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, and prodigiously gifted composer—whose artistry shines through in this release. The music is rich, intricate, and particularly compelling in its arrangements.... read more

Peter Epstein and Idée Fixe - Abstract Realism
by Brad Walseth, JazzChicago.net

We recently enjoyed hearing a recording from alto saxophonist Peter Epstein (The Dark) as part of the trio EEA with and (see our review here). Abtract Realism by Epstein and Idee' Fixe mines similar veins as that edgy release, but a notable exception is the presence of bass (Sam Minaie) and guitar (Andy Barbera) - as well as special guests Brian Walsh on bass clarinet and Gavin Templeton on alto and soprano sax. The Epstein-composed "Painfully... read more

Dawn Clement - Tandem
by Hobart Taylor, KUCI - Irvine, CA

Seattle's Clement is a pianist/composer/and singer who is so much her own self in her music that one can forget that one is listening and just sort of feel good all over for no apparent reason. Slyly humorous akimbo riffs cascade and gambol occasionally supplanted by dreamy interludes of charmed reflection. Each selection on this release is a duet. Julian Priester, trombonist, saxophonist Mark Taylor, drummer Matt Wilson, bassist Michael Glynn,... read more
