George Colligan has released an album of new compositions with young musicians and Colligan himself in a new role with the CD "Risky Notion" by George Collian and Theoretical Planets (Origin 82681).
Most people who know George Colligan think first of him as a pianist and that is as it should be, to think of him as a pianist first. What falls far short of the mark, however, is to think of Colligan only as a pianist. His first love was drums.... read more
The year that was 2020 was a pivotal period for trombonist and jazz artist Ben Patterson. That is because he saw so much change in his own career throughout the year. After more than two decades as a member of the United States Air Force Band's Airmen of Note (as well as its lead trombonist and musical director), Patterson stepped down from the positions and left the organization. Then in March, the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down.... read more
Since he left Jef Neve, Belgian contrabassist Piet Verbist got time and space to work out his own ideas. After two shots with his group Zygomatik and one with Mamutrio, this is now his fourth release for the American label Origin. A new beginning also with an acoustic quartet for which he wrote eight pieces.
'Suite Réunion' is a real showcase for Verbist as a bassist, but especially as a composer. The two minutes long solo on the opener... read more
The burning rainbow and Norse bridge to the afterlife - "Bifrost" is an especially apt title for guitarist John Moulder's new release given the musician's spiritual nature (he is, after all, a Catholic priest) and also due to the fact that Norweigian musicians Arild Andersen (acoustic bass) and Bendik Hofseth (tenor sax) play prominent roles. Andersen is well known for his work beginning with Jan Garabeck in the 1960s and as a leading light in... read more
Multi-reed master Peter Epstein (exclusively on alto sax here), who conceptualized and brought to life one of the great discs of the new century, The Invisible, anchors a very attractive jazz-rock group featuring the Miley brothers, Jeff and James. Long, loping melodic lines, intuitive ensemble interaction, striking soling, and gorgeous colorations set this music apart from run-of-the-mill indie jazz offerings.
All compositions are by Jeff... read more
Nifty straight-ahead set from trombonist Finzer. His big band/large ensemble experiences definitely inform his music when the headcount doesn't range so large. Plenty of big sound goodness, but when the group slows things down and let's the music breathe, that's when the pull of attraction begins. Featuring Glenn Zaleski on piano, Lucas Pino on reeds, Alex Wintz on guitar, Dave Baron on bass and Jimmy MacBride on... read more
Guitarist Corey Christiansen continues an exploration of "jazz-ifying" folk and related songs from the past that he began on his previous disc. He and his group - Zach Lapidus (keys, SuperCollider), Jeremy Allen (bass), Matt Jorgesen (drums) and Michael Spiro (percussion) - tackle a variety of songs from "Cluck Ol' Hen" and "Shenandoah" to "Factory Girl" preserving the essence of each while creating intriguing new arrangements of them. There... read more
The pianist Keigo Hirakawa has a lot of experience in the area of playing jazz music, and these lively 8 tracks welcome Rafael Statin, Brandon Scott Coleman, Robert Hurst, and Alex White.
The title track opens the listen with Hirakawa's meticulous key progressions alongside Statin's soulful sax and White's stunning drum acrobatics, and "Far Above" follows with a breezy demeanor of soft guitar from Coleman that suits the melodic piano.
