Various Artists - The Cool Season: An Origin Records Holiday Collection, Vol. 2
by David Dupont, Cadence

The Cool Season: Origins Records Holiday Collection, Vol. 2 sounds like a label sampler, but is rather the work of one quartet. Volume 1 (12/03) was a fine effort with distinctive arrangements of some lesser-known carols paired with swinging versions of holiday standards. The one drawback of that session was the way the two were mixed, creating some incongruous juxtapositions. This session avoids that problem.

John Stowell / Dave Glenn & The Hawčaptak Quartet - Violin Memory
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

In which we find simply beautiful music becoming a genre all it's own, even if this is the only album in this particular canon. The Pacific northwest's master guitarist meets up with a string quartet and adds color from a trombone making the sum total whew! One of those rare pure listening dates that doesn't have to hit you hard to knock you out, this inspired collection of miniatures blows the ears wide... read more

Milan Verbist Trio - Time Change
by Ferdinand Dupuis-Panther, BelgienInfo (Belgisch-Deutsches Netzwerk)

Carried and with "Nordic heaviness" - one thinks of composers such as Grieg and Sibelius - the trio around pianist Milan Verbist opens the current album. Listening to the melodic lines and harmonies, you might think that a wintry night in Scandinavia is being musically sketched, as if the Nordic winter is coming to life, in which in some places the sun shines only rarely or not at all. "Time Change" is the title of the piece. Truly, the... read more

Ben Paterson - For Once In My Life
by Bill Milkowski, Downbeat

4-STARS! Philly-born pianist Ben Paterson picked up organ after a move to Chicago, where he became inspired by Windy City B-3 wizard Chris Foreman. Along with quintessential organ trio guitarist Peter Bernstein and Chicago drummer George Fludas, Paterson stays strictly in the pocket on this decidedly old-school offering, which harkens back to classic 1960s Blue Note sessions.

Everything feels right on Ray Bryant's "Cubano Chant,"... read more

Karrin Allyson - A Kiss for Brazil
by Stephen Graham, Marlbank (UK)

Best of 2024 A dynamic year so far for jazz vocals - and there's something inside so strong as the feeling intensifies still more liltingly on A Kiss for Brazil. Featuring the great singer from Bahia, Rosa Passos (Amorosa, 2004 is her classic) - there are few singers on the planet who can take a note for a walk like US singer Karrin Allyson.

The A Kiss for Brazil version of Tom Jobim's 'Wave' covered so often since Equinox by Sergio... read more

Kelly Brand Nextet - The Door
by Tim Gault, Chicago Jazz.com

Ding Dong. The ring of a doorbell starts the latest offering from Chicago pianist Kelly Brand. This noted Chicago mainstay here provides an invitation for us to hear a set of mostly new compositions from her pen. A couple of other cuts on the CD also employ some sort of sound effects to briefly frame the mood of these tunes. So we are offered a clever (but thankfully not kitschy) concept to draw us initially across the threshold. Once you enter,... read more

Chris Walden Big Band - No Bounds
by Brenton Plourde, Jazz Review

Hailing from Germany, Chris Walden has combined the two elements of European big band with classic American big band to release a great album.

What really stands out here are the two tracks "People Will Say We're In Love" and "Smile." Both are sung by vocalist Tierney Sutton, the Milwaukee born, Los Angeles transplant who really brings those two songs to life. The album starts off with Walden's version of the David Foster 2006 Winter Olympic... read more

Hal Galper - Ivory Forest Redux
by Matthew Krępski, Multikulti Project (Poland)

FIVE STARS Five decades of jazz creation have resulted in Hal Galper's name, especially in the US, surrounded by admiration among jazz fans and respect among music journalists and musicians. In his work as an educator, Galper identifies himself with rare accomplishments. He is one of the founders of the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and his concept "Forward Motion", first published as a series of articles in Downbeat,... read more
