by Joe Barth, Jazz Guitar Today

Some wonderful guitarists have come out of Pittsburgh, including Shawn Purcell. Shawn studied in the prestigious guitar program at Duquesne University and went on to serve his country as an Air Force musician in some of the top military bands. Zem Audu - Spirits
by S. Victor Aaron, Something Else Reviews

Many of the more progressive jazz types these days boast diverse ethnic/world music bonafides that they creatively infuse into their music that broadens the jazz vernacular. Saxophonist Zem Audu 's brand of jazz is internationally flavored, too, but he didn't get that way out of mere curiosity; he's lived that kind of life.

Born in Nigeria and raised in England, Audu made his way to the jazz epicenter New York seven years ago. Along the... read more

Jim Knapp Orchestra - It's Not Business, It's Personal
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

Modern big band orchestral charts inspired by Gil Evans are delivered on this album by composer/arranger and conductor Jim Knapp and his 13 member ensemble. The textures created the horns sections are quite impressive, floating around John Hansen's piano on "Modal Horizon" with the flutes creating cirrus clouds of sound on "Miami Vince" and framing Jeff Hay's trombone on"Gray Skies". Drummer Matt Jorgensen rumbles under Mark Taylor/as, Vern... read more

Clay Giberson - Pastures
by Rotcod Zzaj, Improvijazzation Nation

As I listen to Clay's superb jazz piano work (for the third time through the album now), one word comes to mind - POWERFUL! His strong style first enchanted my ears in issue # 162, and he got (very) high marks from me on that release as well (in fact, I went back and listened all the way through that album, too - as I often do with jazz players who exceed all expectations). On this (even better) release, he's joined by Donny McCaslin on... read more

Bobby Rozario - Healer
by Editor, Modern Drummer

This is guitarist Bobby Rozario's second recording for Origin Records. A guitar-led band that is a strong combination of Latin percussion and funky drumming, a singing guitarist, and a deep spiritual conviction, could draw an easy comparison to classic 60s and 70s era Santana, and that would be fair. But Rozario is more than that. His guitar playing is deeply grounded, is singing is nice, and his compositions are well conceived.

His musical... read more

Allison Adams Tucker offers a travel memoir in song on her third album, WANDERlust. Tucker sings in isx languages on the album, which vividly captures the yearning of the inveterate travel for the romance and adventure of experiencing far-flung corners of the globe. Storms/Nocturnes - VIA
by Frank Griffith, London Jazz

The Storms/Nocturnes trio, which was celebrating the release of its new CD, VIA on Origin Records, is composed of the "3000 Mile Club" (the distances between their respective domiciles) of jazz pianist, Geoffrey Keezer (San Diego), vibist, Joe Locke (New York City) and multi-reedist, Tim Garland (Whitley Bay), who make up a completely equal triumvirate of contributors to this most egalitarian of groups.

The ten original compositions... read more

The new album from Canadian saxophonist Andrew Rathbun comprises three suites.
