Affinity Trio - Hindsight
by Paul Abella, WDCB (Chicago)

It should come as no surprise that the Affinity Trio sounds as good as they do, considering their regular gig at The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee. The tightness and telepathic interplay heard throughout their debut album, Hindsight, only comes through playing together on a consistent basis. Trumpeter Eric Jacobson, bassist Clay Schaub and pianist Pamela York make some excellent music in this seemingly sparse trio. What's really interesting is that... read more

Collier & Dean - Duets
by Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

This collaboration by Tom Collier and Dan Dean is a bit reminiscent at times of Gary Burton and Steve Swallow, possibly because that project might have been the only previous set of vibes-electric bass duets. Vibraphonist Collier hints at Burton in spots, but also displays his own musical personality, particularly on the more boppish pieces, such as Gerry Mulligan's "Five Brothers" and "So What." Dean is a particularly fluent and witty electric... read more

Lucas Pino - No Net Nonet
by George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

Tenor saxist Lucas Pino hails from the Brubeck Institute, The New School and received his Masters Degree from Julliard, so he knows his way around a tune. Here, he puts together a nine-piece band for eleven cleverly arranged tunes that mix Mingusy grooves and harmonies and swings like a bopper in the process.

Pino himself has an old soul of a sound on his horn, warm and rich as on "Orange" and with luster along with Colin Stranahan's ride... read more

Hal Galper & the Youngbloods - Live at the Cota Jazz Festival
by Bob Bernotas, Just Jazz

Pianist Hal Galper calls his music "Rubato Style." It's free yet formal, lyrical yet rhythmic, soloist-centered yet collectively-based. But beyond all that, it's an intriguing and colorful concept that draws you in and carries you away. In this 2016 performance Galper and three protégés — alto saxophonist Nathan Bellott, bassist Dean Torrey, drummer David Frazier — dig deeply to mine musical riches from three originals and Gordon Jenkins'... read more

Thomas Marriott - Urban Folklore
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

It's funny how you have to read the liner notes to understand how this instrumental jazz can pack in so much politics and observation on the human condition without any vocals. The joys of impressionistic music. Before getting down to the diatribes, the trumpeter hooks up with Orrin Evans piano trio and the sparks fly, maybe because the players understood what lurked beneath (or maybe just because they are smoking players). No matter how you... read more

Andrea Brachfeld & Insight - Evolution
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

The pandemic changed the world view of this Afro Cuban flautist of five decades standing into focusing more on children in need in times of need. The music certainly doesn't sound as down mouthed as that so don't fear. Brachfeld and her long standing crew of real pros are all in synch with the new vibe. This is one powerful gal that wont be held back and the music is the... read more

Dave Slonaker Big Band - Intrada
by Ric Bang, Jazz Scan

Oh, how I miss the big bands! And, as a result, how grateful I am for releases such as this one from Dave Slonaker, who feel the same emptiness, and occasionally fill it with great "temporary" groups.

Unless you're part of the musical world, Slonaker probably isn't on your jazz scope. But if you're a movie or television fan, you've been exposed to him many times during the past 20 years. He has arranged or orchestrated the music for dozens... read more

Hal Galper Trio - Airegin Revisited
by Sam Landsman, Earshot Jazz

Veteran pianist Hal Galper simultaneously incorporates fresh and classic elements of the piano-trio jazz idiom on Airegin Revisited, his latest release with Origin Records. Bassist Jeff Johnson and drummer John Bishop accompany Galper, continuing their six-year history as a trio.

The record is characterized by a unique style of rubato play, where often during each track the music flows freely, unbound by a traditional, countable time. The... read more
