John Stowell & Dan Dean - Rain Painting
by Joe Finn, Jazz Guitar Today

I wanted to mention how much I am enjoying the 2021 album "Rain Painting" by John Stowell & Dan Dean. Modernity meets tradition in this collection of Stowell's compositions and Dean's wordless vocal arrangements and bass playing. The guitar, bass and vocal sounds are all very much in keeping with the heritage of the jazz style. And Stowell's playing swings like crazy. His improvisation is unfailingly melodic and he doesn't tend to repeat himself... read more

Les DeMerle - Hot Night In Venice: Live at The Venice Jazz Club
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

A working muso for over 50 years, he knows how to give a crowd what it wants but this is an important recording for him. In the past he's seemed like an affable cat playing pretty for the people but this time around, he's more in touch with his hard hitting jazzbo side than he's shown in the past. Leading from the back of the riser, he's energized here giving something new and sharp to this collection heavy on oldies. There ain't a jive lick... read more

Anthony Branker and Word Play - Uppity
by Dave Sumner, emusic Review

Branker has quietly been assembling a seriously impressive set of recorded music since focusing on composing and arranging. His talent lies in his ability to take complex music and offer it as simple expressions. What this means is that you?ll get very engaging jazz that is very easy to connect to and just enjoy listening for the sake of listening. On his newest, he has a solid line-up of Ralph Bowen on tenor sax, Andy Hunter on trombone, Elis... read more

Amit Friedman - Sunrise
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

As the world continues to get smaller, we come to the talents of one of the hardest working jazzbo/sax men in Israel. Leading a talk show band, playing with everyone and working hard to make his sextet's debut make an impact, Friedman keeps making moves to sharpen his chops and make his present felt. With kind of an underlying Paul Winter vibe to his impressionistic compositions, Friedman is another of the new breed of players to put the music... read more

Lorin Cohen - Home
by Editor, American Jewish World

Lorin Cohen, an accomplished jazz bassist and composer, recently released his debut album as a leader. Home (Origin Records) features eight songs written by Cohen, which celebrate his hometown musical roots in Chicago and his current home in New York City. The third influence in Cohen's music is the Caribbean, which inspires several tunes, including the lilting "Saudade," with contributions from steel pan virtuoso Victor Provost and... read more

Bobby Broom - The Way I Play: Live In Chicago
by Ben Franklin, Cashbox Magazine

Guitarist Bobby Broom has been recording since the late 1970s. As sideman, he recorded with such leaders as Sonny Rollins, Stanley Turrentine, Kenny Burrell, Dizzy Gillespie, and David Murray. He led sessions for Criss Cross, Delmark, and Premonition. He is one of the founders of the Deep Blue Organ Trio. Despite these associations, he is less well known than he should be.

His current trio, with bassist Dennis Carroll and drummer Kobie... read more

Ray Vega & Thomas Marriott - East West Trumpet Summit: Coast to Coast
by Dick Metcalf, Contemporary Fusion Reviews

If you're in love with smokin' hot trumpets, you'll find this release from Ray and Thomas to be very much to your liking... the best way to get acquainted with these high-energy and high-talent players is to SEE them.

Personally, I fell in love with this June, 2023 album immediately... a variety of styles in the songs they chose, and penetrating energy from the very first note to the last bar.... read more

Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestra - Without a Trace
by Dee Dee McNeil, Musical Memoirs

This winter, a plethora of big band and orchestra CDs have crossed my desk. The Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestra is another very fine example of precision arrangements and excellent musicianship in pursuance of jazz orchestration. From the first Latin strains of cut #1, "Speak Low," I was captivated. This familiar jazz standard features alto saxophonist Steve Wilson and trumpeter Chris Rogers. Each soloist is dynamic and technically astute. An... read more
