Chicago Jazz Orchestra with Cyrille Aimee - Burstin' Out!
by George Fendel, Oregon Jazz Scene

This CD could have easily been released under the name of the singer on the session, Cyrille Aimée. She sings on all 12 tracks and that, in essence, makes it her album as much as the Chicago Jazz Orchestra's. The CJO has been making music since 1978, and I'd suggest that if they were out of New York, we'd all be well acquainted with them. The arrangements are picture perfect, and the soloists tell the story with profound musicianship. The... read more

Scenes - Along the Way
by Rick Holland, Jazz Radio 247

Origin has released a beautiful disc featuring a guitar-led rhythm section, featuring John Stowell. He's accompanied by John Bishop and Jeff Johnson. This disc features 10 new originals by John Stowell and Jeff Johnson. They're explorative originals, which expand a players harmonic and rhythmic sensibilities. The group plays them passionately and creatively.

Scenes was a group that originally started as a quartet. Tenor saxophonist Rick... read more

Allison Adams Tucker - WANDERlust
by Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

Many modern-day jazz vocalists have been known to touchdown in a few different locales over the course of an album, but few to none get their passports stamped in as many places as Allison Adams Tucker does on the aptly named WANDERlust. Tucker brings her multilingual brilliance and cultural savvy to the fore during this expertly planned travelogue.

Tucker's voice is a beautiful instrument - one that floats, flies, and seduces with its... read more

PJ Newman - The Hand Of Dog
by Adam Greenburg, All Music Guide

On The Hand of Dog, Seattle-based artist PJ Newman puts himself to work creating a series of innovative sets. At times reminiscent of Zappa, and at times simply playing with the sounds of his samples, Newman puts together a nice collection of works. His guitar is the centerpiece of the majority of the pieces, often in interplay with a pair of saxes, courtesy of the highly able Jessica Lurie and Sue Orfield. Ben Smith provides a solid drum... read more

Lorin Cohen - Home
by Editor, American Jewish World

Lorin Cohen, an accomplished jazz bassist and composer, recently released his debut album as a leader. Home (Origin Records) features eight songs written by Cohen, which celebrate his hometown musical roots in Chicago and his current home in New York City. The third influence in Cohen's music is the Caribbean, which inspires several tunes, including the lilting "Saudade," with contributions from steel pan virtuoso Victor Provost and... read more

Scenes - Destinations
by Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

4-STARS There are wondrous stories to be found in everything the eye can see, the ear can hear, and the imagination can dream up. Scenes - the trio of guitarist John Stowell, bassist Jeff Johnson, and drummer John Bishop - has been readily and steadily making that point for more than fifteen years, harnessing natural beauty and concocting chimerical designs that extol the virtues of elasticity, mutability, and high-level communication.... read more

ZurHub - Countryside Motorways
by Tom Haugen, Take Effect

The Tel Aviv and New York flutist, Mattan Klein, formed Zurhub in 2017 with the guitarist Ezequiel Hezi, and here with Itay Simhovich, Assaf Hakimi and Dani Benedikt they flesh out a detailed, fusion effort.

"Social Trust" starts the festivities with Benedikt's dense drums before Klein's animated flute enters the rhythmic climate, and "Outdoors Week" follows with Simhovich's warm keys complementing the rich wind and melodic... read more

Michael Dease - MSU Jazz Trombones: Spartan Strong
by George Harris, Jazz Weekly

You've got to love the moxie of trombonist Michael Dease, who thinks he can take on with his trombone and rhythm teams of Xavier Davis & Ethan Frank on piano, Jared Beckstead-Craan & Reuben Stump on bass and drummers Keith Hall, Brian Allen & Randy Gelispie, the MSU Jazz Trombone team consisting of 17, count 'em, 17 trombones and six (!) bass trombones. What could go wrong?

NOTHING! This album is a total delight, with every potential... read more
