Thomas Marriott - Both Sides Of The Fence
by Jerome Wilson, Cadence, Oct-Nov 2007

Trumpeter Thomas Marriott's CD is respectable small group work with a few surprises. Marriott has a soft, quiet sound that excels on slow, introspective pieces like Duke Ellington's "Mew World A Comin'" and glides beautifully on the more uptempo "Summer Night" where Marriott's rhythm section (Marc Seales, Jeff Johnson, and John Bishop) keep a lively conversation going beneath the trumpet.

Another color is introduced when Seales switches to... read more

Benjamin Boone with the Ghana Jazz Collective - Joy
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

When you think of a Fulbright Scholar heading off to deepest darkest Africa, do you picture a white boy that understands funk? Pairing here with his pals, Ghana Jazz Collective, the two cultures collide in a jolly mash up that proves once again that music is the universal language and how easy it is to resolve any conflict if you really want to. Upbeat, badass stuff that's a gasser throughout, it's too bad more white boys can't have this much... read more

Scott Reeves - Portraits and Places
by Doug Simpson, Audiophile Audition

There's inspired music coursing through the debut album by the Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestra. During the hour-long Portraits and Places, Reeves shows many inspirations, from pianist James Williams (his résumé includes stints with Art Blakey and Clark Terry as well as jazz education) to composers such as Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. Through eight compositions (seven originals by Reeves plus one by Antonio Carlos Jobim), Reeves takes his... read more

Bongwool Lee - My Singing Fingers
by Editor, DiscUnion (Japan)

Born in Seoul, Korea, debut work by a woman pianist, Bongwool Lee, living in NY. Piano trio work with Luques Curtis on bass and Kendrick Scott drumming - a rhythm team representing NY. Taylor Eigsti joins in on the fender Rhodes on the 8th song, and he has acclaimed that her music is "a strong melody, rich harmony, and a unique blend of unpredictable balance that is accessible and unpredictable." One more person in the NY jazz scene, a new... read more

Michael Zilber - East West: Music for Big Bands
by George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

Tenor saxist and leader Michael Zilber delivers two different big bands, one from the East Coast and the other from San Francisco on this two disc set. The "East" team has some nice mysterious work on the Wayne Shorter piece"Fall" with bold brass punching away on "Joshua". Tough tenors go gunning on "The Breckerfast Club" and an elegiac "Fantasia on Trane Changes" is a lithe delight. The "West" Team has some searing sax work on the tribute to... read more

Bobby Rozario - Spellbound
by Dick Metcalf, Contemporary Fusion Reviews

Absolutely scorching guitar originality Bobby Rozario - SPELLBOUND: I seldom get "that" excited by a new album these days (I'll be 77 next month, if the chemo don't get me first, lol), but the absolutely scorching guitar originality that guitarist Rozario brings to this new album will have you RAWKin' from the opening notes to the end of the 11 superb tunes offered up (think Santana at Woodstock - yeah, THAT KIND of... read more

John Stowell | Michael Zilber - Shot Through With Beauty
by John Barron, The Jazz Word

Like minds converge on Shot Through With Beauty, a quartet release co-led by guitarist John Stowell and saxophonist Michael Zilber, two stalwarts of West Coast progressive jazz. Joined by bassist John Shifflett and drummer Jason Lewis, who each contribute a composition to the session, the group achieves collaborative serenity through ten tracks of original material and modern-jazz gems from the likes of Kenny Wheeler and... read more

Hugo Fernandez - Cosmogram
by Tom Greenland, The New York City Jazz Record

Guitarist Hugo Fernandez, originally from Mexico, now based in Madrid, has released Cosmogram, his second date as a leader, with the help of countryman drummer Antonio Sanchez, Cuban saxophonist Ariel Bringuez and Spanish bassist Antonio Miguel. A relaxed set with hummable originals, all composed by Fernandez, the music is highly accessible with gentle surprises. Although he's the team captain, Fernandez is more of a midfielder at heart,... read more
