The album 'Night Visitor' is a meeting between guitarists John Stowell and Ulf Bandgren that does not turn into pirouettes and technical delights, but leads to a soundtrack for a nightly city walk.
American guitarist John Stowell and his Swedish colleague Ulf Bandgren have been playing together on a regular basis for more than ten years. Their previous CD 'Throop' dates from 2012. For this recording they received extra support from double bass player Bruno Raberg and drummer Austin McMahon.
'Night Visitor' is a predominantly subdued meeting with the emphasis on warm melodies. Nevertheless, both guitarists also play out in a snappy way, as in the title piece. In 'Ode To Spring' it is the rhythm section that provides a constantly moving background while the two main protagonists quietly do their thing in the foreground. The album ends with the playful and smooth 'Early Five'.
No groundbreaking or revolutionary surprises on this 'Night Visitor', but extremely enjoyable club jazz of the quiet type and with the necessary flair. Stylist Stowell and Bandgren lean very close together. The synergy between the two is almost seamless. Yet there is no hesitation in challenging each other regularly, albeit without extremely dramatic twists. For those who want references, Larry Coryell and Jim Hall are the most obvious names.
