The album was released in August 2022 featuring the LMR Jazz Orchestra, lead vocalists Kurt Elling and Tierney Sutton, the St. Dominic Catholic Church Choir and organist Simon Berry.
The Jazz Mass was commissioned and the brainchild of California's Napa Valley trombonist and entrepreneur Ted Hall, (in honor of his 50th wedding anniversary), who dreamed of a monumental work combining the traditional Latin liturgy and jazz.
Ted Hall's dream of mixing classical meat with jazz dates back to 1969 as a member of Ted Jones and Mel Lewis's big band. Since then he has been experimenting in this direction by composing a requiem mass for Robert Kennedy, broadcast on television channel PBS.
All compositions and arrangements in Chris Walden's Golden Jubilee Jazz Mass are in collaboration with Ted Hall ( member and founder of the LMR Jazz Orchestra ) .
The work is unique as a composition, as it is based on the five parts of the classical mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei), which we know from the works of Bach, Mozart, Handel and many other composers.
The voices of Kurt Elling and Tierney Sutton are another commendable hit in the selection of the musical composition, whose presence helps to strengthen the impact of the work on the audience. The different shades of their timbres radiate nobility, humility, at times romanticism, but also power.
The triumphantly flowing sound of the organ, the fusion of the choral parts with the orchestra, as well as the solo parts of some instruments, bring us closer to the divine sanctity of the masses.
The work of Hollywood composer and arranger Chris Walden is superb. Once again, he proves his skills in orchestrating for a large ensemble and reveals the immeasurable beauty of jazz harmony combined with the gentle and timeless church music
In addition to the main actors listed above in the Golden Jubilee Jazz Mass, here are some musicians also participating: saxophonists Mary Fettig, Aaron Lington and Tom Scott, trombonists Michael Davis and John Brummell, John L. Worley - Jr. ( trumpet/flugelhorn ) , Brian Nova ( guitar ) , Shelley Berg ( piano ) , Gary Novak ( drums ) , Carlitos del Puerto ( bass ) .
