5-STARS Saxophonist Jordan VanHemert has hired an all-star band for his album. This includes the outstanding trumpeter Terell Stafford, the exquisite trombonist Michael Dease and the fantastic rhythm section with Helen Sung, Rodney Whitaker and Lewis Nash. The sextet plays at the highest level and adds highlights to the eight compositions. The first track, Sharel Cassity's "Call to Order" with rousing solos from trumpet, piano, alto saxophone and drums, already shows the way forward for the album. This is followed by Jimmy Heath's "Sound For Sore Ears", followed by the gospel-inspired "Hard Times", which is reminiscent of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet. Other highlights include the Jordan VanHemert compositions "Everything Changes, Everything Stays the Same", a sensitive ballad, and "Autumn Song", a ballad that is masterfully performed by VanHemert and Helen Sung as a duo and moves the listener to tears. In between is the Stevie Wonder song "Superwoman" with a wonderful solo on the double bass. The album closes with the hard bop-style Michael Dease composition "ST in the House" and the slightly rocky blues Terell Stafford's "Blues For JT".
