5-STARS "Big Bands Never Die" - this is the motto of this album with outstanding music. Ben Patterson has written and arranged great compositions that will make the heart of every big band fan beat faster. The album opens with the Chris Potter composition "Exclamation" with the 17-piece Jazz Orchestra in top form and a brilliant piano solo by Chris Ziemba. This is followed by a rather rocky number "Interesting Times", in which Ben Patterson and Antonio Orta shine with fiery solos; the band's excellent ensemble work is also admirable here. This is followed by "The Way of the Groove", an uptempo number that features a flute intermezzo, but also captivates with great solos by Alec Aldred, Ben Patterson and Shawn Purcell. With "Stank Face" the band stays true to the motto of the album "Groove Junkies", where Patterson's great arrangement stands out alongside the solos of trumpet, guitar and tenor saxophone. You are reminded of Weather Report with "Cheese Hat", which after a ballad-like beginning dives into jazz-rock territory and doesn't let your feet rest with a great solo on the electric bass and a solo by Tedd Baker. Finally the orchestra goes down the Latin jazz path with "Esp'ritu Valiente", which ends a really inspiring big band album that invites you to listen to it again and again.
