After a lengthy soujourn in Paris(10 years),Chicago saxophonist Brad Wheeler returns to the world of studio recording with an album that just demands your undivided attention. The Future was Yesterday has an immediate effect on the listener right from the get go and the overall result is almost like a head butt from a drunken Glaswegian soccer fan.A cerebral musical opus which highlights Wheelers robust yet individual style, this really grabs your head but also leaves loads of space for contemplation. The opening track"Inner Vision"begins with an almost primeval drum solo before giving way to Wheelers sax which is loud yet lyrical. His textures, tones and improvisations are really addictive. The compositions(all his own work)are quite simply superb.Make no mistake, this is a major talent. There may be shades of Coltrane but there are many more shades of Wheeler. The interaction between saxophone and producer Laurence Hobgood's piano is spine tingling.John Moulders guitar work is inspired yet economical and the rhythm section of Rob Amster on bass and Frank Parker on drums is just perfect.Brad Wheeler has released a gem.The Future was Yesterday is not just the sound of tomorrow but also next week and next year.Play it often, play it LOUD and if your next door neighbour gets pissed off, well then play it for him or her.It just might blow their minds.
