... a powerful new voice in bop, channeling the spirit of legends like Clifford Brown and Miles Davis with impressive technical skill and eloquent solos.
Picking up where 2024's Stanco's Time left off, trumpeter Anthony Stanco's third album resides in the gritty, soulful world of hard bop. Captured live at Traverse City's The Alluvion—a space brimming with energy & history—the album channels the immediacy and fire of a great night on the bandstand, with the compositions drawing inspiration from the waters surrounding the town and echoing the spirit of the venue itself. Pianist and club founder Jeff Haas plays a pivotal role in the project, contributing both an original composition and the album's liner notes. Visual artist Lisa Flahive adds another layer to the experience, painting the album's cover live during the performance. Rooted in the traditions of Cannonball Adderley's live sessions and the grooving pulse of Blue Note records of the '60s, guitarist Randy Napoleon, pianist Xavier Davis, bassist John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth make In the Groove into both a tribute to and a continuation of that lineage—bold, joyful, and unapologetically alive.
"... a stunning album, blending bebop, hard bop, and soul jazz with a top-tier quintet. A must-listen for any jazz fan."
