Karen MARGUTH is an American singer based in Fresno, Southern California where the jazz scene is quite active.

"Until" is her fifth album (1st on the Origin Records label) with 11 relatively unknown and rarely used themes in the world of Jazz, with the exception of "Days of Wine and Roses" by Henri MANCINI which closes the disc in public .

These pieces were recorded on dates spanning from 2011 to 2021, in Fresno, El Cerrito and Berkeley, with around fifteen different musicians for each session, but the disc does not suffer from a lack of unity.

The atmosphere of the album is therefore resolutely "West Coast" in a pleasantly cool, balanced and relaxed atmosphere, with the frequent intervention of excellent musicians for long improvisations, and the suave and natural voice of Karen MARGUTH's soprano.

The themes chosen are mainly from the pop repertoire, with a Latin incursion into Spanish for "La Ronda" by the Colombian Marta GOMEZ.

"Comes Loves", is a theme by Sam STEPT, Lew BROWN and Charles TOBIAS for Broadway, well supported by the trio with whom Karen regularly works, David AUS (piano), Richard GIDDENS (bass), Brian HAMADA (drums, deceased in 2018), with a muted trumpet solo by Erik JEKABSON.

"Until", a beautiful theme from STING, is accompanied by the mandolin of Eva SCOW who takes a long solo in single notes followed by guitarist Mark TAYLOR.

The climate of "Black Crow", a song taken from the famous album "Hejira" by the great Canadian poet and singer Joni MITCHELL, is well respected in the introduction with John R's Wurlitzer. BURR who then takes a long piano solo.

"What Color is Love", an elegant, melancholy and romantic ballad by author and performer Terri CALLIER (1945-2012), unjustly misunderstood, is interpreted with sobriety and beautiful and touching emotion, with a trumpet solo.

"Hearts and Bones" and "Old Friends" are two themes by Paul SIMON, with a quotation from the Gymnopédie n°1 by Erik SATIE, with guitar and piano solos.

"Maureen" by Matt FINDERS and Karen MARGUTH is a ballad well highlighted by flugelhorn and piano solos.

"Close your Eyes", by Berenice PETKIRE, on a fairly fast tempo, is accompanied by a double bass piano duo.

"Twistable Turnable Man" by Andrew BIRD and Shel SILVERSTEIN, was arranged by pianist John BURR with a double bass solo by Dan FEISZLI. A beautiful, very successful record, sober and elegant, with pretty arrangements and beautiful emotional moments, to be listened to by the fireside in the tranquility of a mild Christmas evening, a good glass of mulled wine with cinnamon hand.
