Nadav Snir-Zelniker - Thinking Out Loud
by Bill Milkowski, JazzTimes

Israeli-born drummer Nadav Snir-Zelniker joins Todd Coolman on bass and Ted Rosenthal on piano for this enjoyable collection of standards and originals. From the joyful opener, "Pizmon Layakinton," they tackle a burning rendition of "Secret Love" before diving into inventive interpretations of Billy Strayhorn's "Isfahan" and Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies," the latter underscored by Snir-Zelniker's slick brushwork and insistent ride-cymbal pulse.... read more

Adam Shulman - Here/There
by Tree Palmedo, Jazz Society of Oregon

Pianist Adam Shulman's group is another collection of accomplished straight-ahead players, in this case all based in San Francisco. The music here is reminiscent of Joe Henderson's 1960s repertoire, with ample Elvin Jones-esque swing and Afro- Cuban grooves. On the opener, "Grant and Green," which is named after a beloved watering hole near Coit Tower, an angular melody makes way for a burning improvisation from trumpeter Mike Olmos. Tenorman... read more

Nelda Swiggett - Blue-Eyed Painted Lady
by Lofton A Emenari, WHPK

Under The Radar: 3 Recordings that merit considerable attention. Over the past year many recordings pass my desk, some good, some not so good. Here are 3 that did not gain appreciable wider recognition and acclaim in the mass market media yet are hall marked distinctively for speaking directly to our collective human condition. 1. Joseph Daley-Portraits (Wind, Love & Thunder)- JDA Music ...String orchestra tribute to the percussion artistry of... read more

Andy Wheelock - WHEE3Trio: In the Wheelhouse
by Mark Griffith, Modern Drummer

Drummer Andy Wheelock is a welcome mainstay to the Colorado jazz drumming scene, and this recording proves that he belongs at the top of the heap of drummers making their way on the scene. This is wonderful sounding and supple piano trio that can go in any musical direction. Whether it's swinging, funky, elastic, or driving, they sound great. Wheelock and bassist Gonzalo Teppa work together like a hand in a glove. The addition of guitarist Gilad... read more

Gail Pettis - May I Come In?
by Alan Bargebuhr, Cadence, Jan-Mar 2008

"May I Come In?" brings to light the hitherto recondite vocal gifts of Gail Pettis. Despite having established herself in and around her Seattle base, and in various foreign ports of call, such as The Netherlands, where she was recently artist-in-residence at the Amersfoort Jazz Festival, and in Japan where she was guest artist at the Kobe Annual Jazz Vocal Queen Competition, here at home she remains more or less unknown east of the Cascades.... read more

Alex Budman and the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra - Instruments of Mass Pleasure
by Edward Blanco, Jazz Review

A fixture at Jazz At Pearls in San Francisco every Monday night for over a decade, The Contemporary Jazz Orchestra led by saxophonist/bandleader, Alex Budman, have just released their first studio album entitled Instruments Of Mass Pleasure. The group has three previous live recordings to their credit, the latest being Monday In The City released in 2002. The band hails from the San Francisco bay area and is comprised of local professional... read more

Ted Piltzecker - Peace Vibes
by Editor, Bman's Blues Report

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Peace Vibes, from Ted Piltzecker and it's a solid combination of original and classic covers. Opening with Benny Golson's "Whisper Not," Ted Piltzecker on vibraphone begins the melody joined by Brad Goode playing counter melody on trumpet. Gonzalo Teppa on bass and Paul Romaine on drums provide a tight rhythm section for a lush exploration of this well known classic.... read more

Libby York - DreamLand
by Joe Lang, Jersey Jazz

York loves lyrics and is a premier interpreter of the words to each song she sings. There is a jazz underpinning to her vocalizing, but she is always right there for each listener, no matter how sophisticated their musical tastes."
Despite being on the scene for over 40 years, DreamLand (OA2 Records - 22208) is only the fifth recording from the marvelous vocalist LIBBY YORK. As she has on her previous releases, York has chosen well her... read more
