Storms/Nocturnes - VIA
by Chris Ingham, Mojo Magazine

After a seven-year hiatus, the third album by superstar chamber trio doesn't disappoint

The music made by British saxophonist Tim Garland, pianist Geoffrey Keezer and vibraphonist Joe Locke is of such high-end refinement, beuaty and excitement that their Storms/Nocturnes trio is in danger of being leader in a field of one. Using a detailed, near-classical composition (three from each player) as a starting point, the group's delicate and fiery... read more

Chuck Deardorf - Transparence
by Pierre Giroux, Audiophile Audition

Some interesting contrasts and top-notch playing.

The latest CD issued by Seattle resident bassist Chuck Deardorf, entitled "Transparence", is a bit of a mash-up but in a good way. Bringing together a number of dependable musicians from the North West, along with several high profile visitors, these sides were recorded between 2007 and 2010 and present Deardorf and friends in a variety of settings and musical styles.

Deep Blue Organ Trio - Wonderful!
by Mark F. Turner, All About Jazz

Since the 1960s, Stevie Wonder's "My Cheri Amour" has remained one of the most memorable love songs in popular music. In collaboration with Motown songwriters Henry Cosby and Sylvia Moy, the hit song was originally titled "Oh My Marcia"?at the time, a tender ode to Wonder's girlfriend in his adolescent years. The two broke up, the song underwent a name change, and the rest is history.

The Deep Blue Organ Trio offers its own heartfelt... read more

Piet Verbist - Flamenco Jazz Summit: El Mar Empieza Aqui
by Ferdinand Dupuis-Panther, Jazz'halo (Belgium)

The label writes the following lines about the album: "Forceful and mystic, with a beauty and intensity that reminded him of his first hearings of Miles, Mingus, or Monk, Belgian bassist & composer Piet Verbist was pulled into his deep study of Flamenco culture several years ago through a grant from the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. After a dozen immersive trips to Andalusia to study, perform, and develop a repertoire, Piet presented concerts... read more

Dan Cray - Meridies
by Dan Healy, Chicago Jazz Magazine

Judging especially from the liner notes, life change and forward motion are a major theme of Dan Cray?s new quartet CD, Meridies. As a virtuosic pianist who has recently made the journey from Chicago to New York, the sidemen selection seems only natural. Cray and bassist Clark Sommers have both worked in Chicago and New York, while saxophonist Noah Preminger and drummer Mark Ferber are both established New York musicians. In the instance of this... read more

Maja Jaku - Blessed & Bewitched
by Tim Larsen, JazzViews (UK)

For many American listeners, Blessed & Bewitched will be an introduction to Maja Jaku, a Kosovo-born singer who has already built a strong reputation in Europe. She brings a voice that can be powerful and direct, yet she's just as comfortable pulling it back to a hushed intensity, shaping phrases carefully and letting the meaning of the lyrics come through. That sense of control traces back to a musical household — her father was a trumpet... read more

José Luiz Martins - Odyssey Mixtape
by Tom Haugen, Take Effect

The Brazil native and piano, keys and synth player José Luiz Martins recruits plenty of ideas from his heritage for these 7 tracks that embrace jazz, classical and popular music sensibilities.

"Incerteza" opens with a dreamy presence, where John Lee's radiant guitar flows alongside Martins' fluid keys and Dana Hawkins' skilled drumming, and "Don't Act Like" follows with Nakama's expressive voice that suits the funk stabs and Tyrone Allen... read more

Metropolitan Jazz Octet - The Bowie Project
by Tom Haugen, Take Effect

The Chicago ensemble Metropolitan Jazz Octet joins forces with the vocalist Paul Marinaro for this very well crafted listen that illuminates David Bowie's work with much creativity.

The aptly titled "Slow Burn" opens the listen with the soulful, emotive brass meshing with Bob Stutter's warm keys and Rob Rummage's firm drums in the very dreamy climate, and "5:15 The Angels Have Gone" follows with Marinaro's expressive vocals being complemented... read more
