LIVE REVIEW: OTTAWA JAZZ FESTIVAL
June 22: Joel Miller Quartet, Ninety Miles and The Fellowship Band - If the first night of the festival was only tangential in its relation to jazz, the second night was proof that the Ottawa Jazz Festival is committed to bringing top quality jazz to the big stage at Confederation Park; they couldn't have put together a better triple bill. Still, if Canadian saxophonist Joel Miller, the all-star... read more
In his album notes, pianist Galper writes that he was unaware of what "an interesting and unique composer" his longtime bass-playing associate Jeff Johnson is. The three pieces that Johnson contributed to Cubist leave no doubt about his writing ability. The title tune plus "Kiwi," "Artists" and "Scene West" give Galper, Johnson and drummer John Bishop plenty of challenging material. They make the most of it. Galper's post-bop credentials with... read more
Thomas is among the best trumpeters on the jazz scene today - no doubt about that... I reviewed him in issue # 152, and was impressed enough to give him very high ratings; on this new outing (January, 2016), he's added B-3 organist George Colligan, and that organ makes all the difference in the world for this keyboard player... you'll also hear trumpet/flugelhorn from Ray Vega and drums by Matt Jorgenson! Their version of Lee Morgan's "Totem... read more
4-STARS The potent partnership of guitarist John Stowell and saxophonist Michael Zilber plays out on this highly interactive and adventurous set recorded before a live audience at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley. Fueled by the remarkably empathetic Bay Area rhythm tandem of bassist John Shifflet and drummer Jason Lewis, Stowell and Zilber take their time and follow their muse quite freely throughout this intimate concert.... read more
Ringing right in the middle of Duets, the new release by mallet man (vibes and marimba player) Tom Collier and bassist Dan Dean, is the unlikely--for a jazz set--Jagger/Richards tune, "What A Shame." It's an instrumental here, of course, but on the Rolling Stones version, the lyric goes:
What a shame,
nothing seems to be going right...
It's a nice take on the tune, but the sentiment doesn't ring true for Collier and Dean. With this, as... read more
On The Hand of Dog, Seattle-based artist PJ Newman puts himself to work creating a series of innovative sets. At times reminiscent of Zappa, and at times simply playing with the sounds of his samples, Newman puts together a nice collection of works. His guitar is the centerpiece of the majority of the pieces, often in interplay with a pair of saxes, courtesy of the highly able Jessica Lurie and Sue Orfield. Ben Smith provides a solid drum... read more
Hal Galper's impressive discography is matched by his vast body of compositions. Over the past decade, the pianist has focused on playing rubato style, freeing the rhythm section and allowing the music to evolve in
ways that often surprise. Recently retired from teaching at Purchase Conservatory, Galper recruited some of his favorite former students - alto saxophonist Nathan Bellott, bassist Dean Torrey and drummer David
Frazier - to form the... read more
4 1/2 STARS Pianist and composer Bill Anschell has made his mark in jazz as a distinctive pianist with a notable body of work. His time in Atlanta, and his extensive residency in Seattle, has produced ten recordings as a leader or co-leader, and a well-deserved following on live dates with two distinctive trios, plus his "Rumbler" band. His previous two recordings define the past decade of his career, with Shifting Standards (Origin,... read more
