The world is full of terrific jazz drummers, but few are also great composers, arrangers, orchestrators and leaders. Tim Davies fits that bill, and he's also a Grammy Award winner. The Australian-born artist formed his first band in Melbourne in 1998, and moved to the United States shortly thereafter. From 2000 onward, his big bands have been stationed in Los Angeles, where he released two album.
Why only two? He's too busy composing,... read more
4-STARS The Peterson-Kohler Collective is a marriage of both familial and Northwestern musicians. John Bishop, drummer and co-founder of Origin Records, unites guitarist Dave Peterson with his cousins, Lee and Rob Kohler, who play piano and bass, respectively. Also joining the group is the versatile saxophonist Brent Jensen. From the sense of isolation evoked by the album's cover to the music contained within, their debut recording is... read more
A cast of heavyweight talent?
****1/2 Stars
Origin Records has pulled in first string talent for drummer Rich Thompson's second release for the label. Thompson, who has been a jazz educator for the Eastman School of Music, as well as having a tenure with a Count Basie tribute band, has a quintet with all-star pedigree, including the virtuosic trumpeter Terrell Stafford, and multi-instrumentalist Gary Versace, both who... read more
A fine environment - psychologically and acoustically - allows Williams to make one of her finest recordings yet. 5*****
Such a title might seem excessively self-promotional with most other jazz pianists on the scene today, but not so with Jessica Williams. She's one of the nation's musical treasures and one of the most distinctively original jazz pianists to be heard anywhere. This is her third CD for Origin, recorded live at... read more
Fresh big band charts and deliveries are produced by composer/conductor Scott Reeves as he leads a team that includes all stars Steve Wilson/ss-as-fl and Carolyn Leonhart/voc. The vocalist is featured on a lithe and brassy title track, as Wilson gives an aria alongside Jim Ridi's somber musings on "Incandescence." Reeves shows cleverness as he charts a Latinized "Speak Low" with bright section work and Wilson teaming with Chris Rogers/tp and... read more
MLK Convergence showcases Chicago bass stalwart Marlene Rosenberg's muscular sound, rocksteady time and imaginative solo ideas far better than her first Origin recording, 2012's Bassprint. The title of this recent recording comes from the "convergence" of Dr. King's initials with those of her star-studded trio—Marlene, Lewis (Nash) and Kenny (Barron). It's also an allusion to the album's affirmative theme of social justice.
Hope emanates... read more
Not your typical vibe record, this vibe player leans into improv in a big way and has a multi generational crew of like minded hell raisers along for his label debut ride. Riding that tip of music as art in that downtown kind of way, the open eared will enjoy this ride into impressionistic realms not previously considered. The next wave is upon... read more
Doug Miller's Regeneration is straight-ahead jazz in the modern vein, with a few twists, not the least of which is that there are drums on only four of the eleven tracks, giving the music a nice chamber jazz vibe. The bassist composed all but two of the tunes, and presents a fine mix of feels and meters. Noteworthy is his Ballad for Don and Midge and his dedication to John Clayton, Blues For Junior. The two standards included on the recording... read more
