The piano trio of Dawn Clement, Buster Williams, and Matt Wilson have found a nice musical foundation to stand on and a nice atmosphere to live within, and that foundation and atmosphere are a Delight.
If you think you know where the performances on the opener "Outstretch" or "Alone Together" are going, keep listening (and be pleasantly surprised.) "Monk's Dream" is probably closer to what you were expecting from this trio. Clement has a firm... read more
Pianist Nelson's ode to the Red Planet, inspired by science, stories and space travel. A deft mix of solo, small & large ensemble, instrumental and vocal pieces. For an album with a (relatively) small sound, it's awfully damn... read more
Origin Suite is a swinging, grooving big band disc with drummer, vibraphonist, and composer Michael Waldrop adding thoughtful support under some fine frontline solos. Waldrop works out over the Latin flavors of "Origin Suite: 3) Al Final de la Noche" with sensitivity and wonderfully controlled snare and tom interplay.... read more
Chicago based saxophonist Geof Bradfield's Melba! is a much needed tribute to the criminally underexposed trombonist and arranger Melba Liston. Liston debuted with trumpeter, bandleader Gerald Wilson, was one of the stars of trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie's bebop big band and devoted herself to arranging after she met pianist Randy Weston with whom she had a long and fruitful career.

The Brent Jensen/David Sills Quartet quite cleverly revives the West Coast Jazz sound on the disc Stay Cool (Origin Records 82403). Honestly, we were expecting next to nothing and then found ourselves running over to the stereo to turn up the volume once the recording got started. West Coast Jazz, in certain circles, has the reputation for being the 1950s equivalent to white rap. "Certain circles" continue to take all the joy out of jazz. We'll... read more
As far as debut discs by relatively new artists these days, Kobie Watkins' Involved is way above the norm. For a sampling of the diversity of his percussive talent, it spans quite a large stylistic panorama and gives an introductory snapshot of his already expansive versatility. For those out there that haven't met him yet, Wathins first came to many music mavens' attention playing gigs with everyone from guitarist Bobby Broom to Sonny... read more
The co-op quartet Big Neighborhood performs catchy originals that stretch the modern mainstream of jazz. A particularly tight unit that has each of the four musicians thinking in similar directions, Big Neighborhood features concise solos, a colorful group sound, some tricky time signatures, and distinctive voices in altoist Chris Fagan and guitarist David White (who also plays guitar synthesizer). All of the music on their two-CD release could... read more
Pianist and keyboardist Geoff Stradling puts together a big band for his crisp and warm arrangements of mostly originals, almost all with an alluring Latin feel. The rhythm section of drums, congas, bongos, shakers and you name it create a percolating undercurrent for the whole affair. Joe DeLeon's timbales sizzle on the festive "Habanero" and a read of "Poinciana" hums to Tom Luer's alto. The sax section wails with soprano saxist Kirsten Edkins... read more
