The Spin Quartet - In Circles
by Don Lerman, Cadence

The Spin Quartet consists of top-notch musicians who carve out an interesting group identity on In Circles. The absence of a piano or guitar from the instrumentation of two horns, bass, and drums gives clarity and an open quality to the music, aided by the fine writing from mostly band members. Trumpeter/flugelhornist Chad McCullough wrote five of the pieces, with the subdued "Oranges Are Supposed to be Orange" and bright-eyed "Haberdasher"... read more

Marc Bernstein & Good People - Hymn For Life
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

There's quite a bit of subtle mix mastering here as the New York sax man relocates to Denmark, brings old pal, Bob Moses, in for the session, has a former student of his drafted into being the crew's vocalist and finally rounding out the gang with some well skilled locals we aren't familiar with. Bernstein has developed his sense of Euro jazz but still hasn't left his left leaning Big Apple skronk behind. Tailored for those who like it left... read more

Peter Lerner - Continuation
by Jack Bowers, All About Jazz

Nothing unflattering can be said about Chicago-born and -based guitarist Peter Lerner's latest album, Continuation. The energy level is high, the charts admirable, the supporting cast exemplary. On the other hand, it would be hard to separate the enterprise from a veritable sea of rivals that dwell in a comparable groove. As there is nothing explicit with which to censure this earnest studio session, neither is there anything special to... read more
