Richard Cole - A Glance Back
by Adam Greenburg, All Music Guide

The debut solo album from Richard Cole, a Seattle sax player with some pretty good chops. The tone is relatively high here, making use of squeaks and squeals as possible, and holding to a modern jazz ideal in general. The solos sometimes draw themselves out in a slow arc before moving on, but they showcase some very nice sensitivity in exploring the range. The jazz scene in Seattle picked up quite a bit after the release of this album, and this... read more

Clarence Penn - Monk: The Lost Files
by James Hale, Downbeat

If you were unaware of Clarence Penn's sharp, creative work with trumpeter Dave Douglas, or his years of empathetic, intelligent playing as a member of Maria Schneider's orchestra, you could be forgiven for assuming that Monk: The Lost Files was one too many recordings of Thelonious Monk classics. Penn's audacious interpretation of "Well You Needn't" quickly lays any reservations to rest. All stuttering beats and slippery... read more

Sonando - Tres
by Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

Here's an interesting item. A Latin jazz release from Seattle. What makes it interesting is that Sonando is able to incorporate both the idioms of Latin jazz and the subtlety and grace that's fast becoming the hallmark of the Northwest jazz scene. The pieces here are a mix of originals and pieces from around the jazz world (Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver, Abdullah Ibrahim), rearranged as needed to fit the desired style. It's the seamless... read more

John Moulder - Trinity
by Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

Sacred music does not typically unfold in gritty jazz clubs.

But considering that the headliner at the Green Mill over the weekend was a Catholic priest, the rarefied choice of material seemed thoroughly appropriate.

Though guitarist John Moulder has been performing and recording steadily here for the past couple of decades, he achieved an artistic high point in 2006 when he released "Trinity" (Origin Records). Like Duke Ellington's Sacred... read more

Eric Jacobson - Heading Home
by Tom Haugen, Take Effect

The trumpet extraordinaire Eric Jacobson is joined by an all star cast for these timeless and rich jazz selections.

"Survival" starts the listen with no lack of energy, where George Fludas' animated drums suit Jacobson's glowing trumpet, and "Three Of A Kind" follows with bit of intimacy, as Bruce Barth's mature keys align with soulful horns.

Halfway through, "My Love For Amy" is an intimate moment, as the stirring trumpet tugs on the... read more

Hal Galper - Trip the Light Fantastic
by Johan Powell, 17 Dots, emusic blog

Jazz piano vet and highly regarded educator, Hal Galper offers another solid recording to his lengthy discography. Galper has a very identifiable sound, not sure I can adequately compare him to anyone. The way in which he strings notes together, it always leaves me with the impression of falling down a flight of stairs without ever leaving my feet? a controlled cohesive randomness that's just a wee bit dangerous and could prove fatal. With Jeff... read more

Sarah Partridge - Bright Lights and Promises: Redefining Janis Ian
by Simon Redley, Music Republic Magazine

4-STARS Janis Ian. Folk legend. Singer. Songwriter. A star for five decades. A songwriter's songwriter. It takes a brave soul to set out to "redefine" her songs at all, but in another genre and style altogether requires a giant leap of faith.

US jazz artist Sarah Partridge is that person who dreamed up this project; to reinterpret some of Janis' well known and lesser known songs in her own style. She has Janis appear on the record... read more

Hadley Caliman - Straight Ahead
by Brad Walseth, JazzChicago.net

Based on his background and abilities, it is astonishing that a player like tenor saxophonist Hadley Caliman is not more well-known. Originally from L.A., Caliman studied with Dexter Gordon before touring with Mongo Santamaria, Gerald Wilson, Willie Bobo, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson and many more, even - at one point - touring live with the rock group Santana. For more than twenty years, he was a member of the music faculty... read more
